Cool My First Dyno Results!

6 Runs on the Dyno last night!

Outside temp was 70+ and humid, was having a hard time keeping the intake & wtr temps down to "normal" "wind cooling" driving temps. Had a fan on the front of the car, but wasn't helping much (was on mobile dyno - outside). Not optimal hp weather, but anywho...

Bought the car in January 02, bone stock. Added sig mods and figured it was time to give her a run and maybe do a bit of tweaking with my limited PFC knowledge. Jason from the RX7Store came out (as he is local to me) to give advise. Thanks Jason!

Here is the detail of the runs with corrisponding hp/trq dyno & a/f wideband graphs below them.

run 1: PFC basemap w/ low boost (.8 bar ~10.5psi)
run 2: PFC basemap w/ high boost (.9 bar ~12.5psi)

run 3:
PFC basemap w/ high boost (.9 bar ~12.5psi)
Pulled 5% fuel out of PIMs from 3k - 7k
PIMS were @ 95% 3 - 7k, 100% below 3k and @ 8k

run 4:
PFC basemap w/ high boost (.9 bar ~12.5psi)
Pulled an additional 2.5% fuel out of PIMs from 3k - 7k
PIMS were @ 92.5% 3 - 7k, 100% below 3k and 98% 8k

run 5:
PFC basemap w/ higher boost (.95 bar ~13.5psi)
Pulled an additional 2.5% fuel out of PIMs from 3k - 7k
PIMS were @ 90.6% 3 - 7k, 100% below 3k and 96% 8k

run 6:
PFC basemap w/ higher boost (.95 bar ~13.5psi)
Pulled an additional 2% fuel out of PIMs from 3k - 7k
PIMS were @ 88.6% 3 - 7k, 100% below 3k and 96% 8k

http://flathat.woodstream.net/RX7/fo...o-runs-3-6.jpg

Even after pulling out that much fuel, the car was still running rich between 3k and 7.5k (end of run), with ratio's of high 10's to low 11's. Think that might be due to the Denso upgrade fuel pump? I certainly feel safe, but know there is probably more power. Didn't touch the timing or any other maps because I am still tuning-dumb in that area!

I'll be on the dyno again after I put in platinum plugs, install (probably) the HKS ignition amp hopefully clean up some of the higher RPM breakup and the Greddy 2 FMIC which is sitting in my basement. Will certainlly post a followup then!

Any comments? I was very happy to hit the 285hp rwhp on such minor BPU mods and be in a more than safe a/f zone.

Those are some nice numbers.

I wish I coulda made it out today, but I have no MP at the moment and I need to install that R-Magic PFC I just got.

I would just like to say that, in my opinion, you have the nicest RX7 on the planet (wth the exception of the white face boost gauge).

BrianK: Thanks - ya one of these days I'll get a dual guage pod and black face guages...

Gotta admit - silver is the BEST color for the FD!

Dyno Day II!

1) Removed the Bonez Hi-Flow cat, replaced it with the RX7 Store's SS MidPipe.

2) Installed the HKS TwinPower Igni Amp

3) Did not install the Platinum plugs or pulley set yet (ran out of time)

Here are results from my dyno today, VERY happy to have broken 300hp!!!

still a bit rich a/f, but I went home happy today!

When I first looked at your #'s and looket at your mods I was saying to myself "so much for the 10HP per mod average" but now I know that not all the mods in your sig were on your car during the first runs. I have the mods you have except for the fuel pump and midpipe. I have a larger SMIC so I would compare that somewhat to your 2 row. I was thinking I would Dyno at 300RWHP but seeing your results I may fall short.

Do you folks think that a larger fuel pump will cause you to run rich. Isn't that the injectors setting that would cause that?

Just to clarify one your 300+ rwhp run what all mods did you have? What was your intake temp via PFC? Were you still running the totally stock PFC base map and adjusting the PIM% and boost level? What is your PIM at now?

Thanks,
STEPHEN

did you stick with run #6 settings???

Seems, I would have gone with #5.
4ft/lbs of torque it more valuable to me than 1 hp. Just asking

EDIT - just saw your 300hp run. I guess my point is moot

I've been mod'ing quickly and didn't list my mods in my first post, not realizing that when I updated my sig it would kinda screw up the relation between mods & performance.

So to backup and clarify, at the time of the FIRST dyno I had the follow performance mods.

Apexi Power Intake / PowerFC w/Commander & Datalogit
M2 Downpipe / Bonez Hi-Flow Cat / Greddy Power Extreme Exhaust
Nippondenso Competition Fuel Pump

-----------

The second dyno day (3 days later), I replaced the Bonez Hi-Flow Cat with a RX7Store SS MidPipe and added the HKS Twin Power. (Gained 21HP)

Actually I gained more like 30rwhp here is why.

The first day, first run with PIMS @ 100% & boost at .8bar I did 268.1rwhp

When I came back the second day, I reset the PIMS to 100% & boost to .8bar I did 299rwhp.

-----------

Since then I've done a few other things (and have a new clutch on the way), should hit the dyno again in a week or so. Shooting for 330 - 340rwhp.

Hey Kyle,

I have very similar mods to yours on the first dyno day but with the HKS twinpower. Can you send me your fuel maps? I would like to compare it with the SR maps with my datalogit. ta_rex7@hotmail.com

Thanks.

Thumbs up

good job! now do you mind posting a link to the maps you are running on your car? (if you got them from a link) if not...like pomanferrari, do you mind e-mailing to me if it isn't too much trouble? fordms@okstate.edu

thanks,
mikey

pomanferrari - can you post the PM I just sent you to this thread? I didn't save a copy.

Mikey2 - The only thing I changed between runs were the PIM Voltages. Didn't touch the actual maps, was running the base modmap in the PFC.

Could you send me your maps too Looking at your mods there almost the same, but you have a few more. Would I run rich or lean with your maps?

NOTE: I just typed out the longest post I've ever done, then it errored on me, I even Ctrl-C before trying to post in the "save my *** fashion" but some other garbage ended up in my buffer... anyways, here we go again...

pomanferrari, mikey2 & moto3 -

The only tuning I've done to the PFC base modmap is to adjust the PIM Voltages and remove fuel since I was running rich with the PFC + Denso Fuel Pump. The PIM Voltage settings are an easy (yet broad) was to add/remove fuel across a wide rpm range. I believe my final settings after the last dyno were as follows:

8000rpm - ~96%
7000rpm - ~94%
6000rpm - ~92%
5000rpm - ~92%
4000rpm - ~92%
3000rpm - ~96%
2000rpm - 100%
1000rpm - 100%

These settings indicate that the PFC should inject XX% of the indicated injector map fuel @ a specific rpm. The PFC will interpolate between the available rpm settings. For example at 2500rpm, the adjustment will be 1/2 way between the 2000rpm adjustment setting and the 3000rpm adjustment setting. In the above table that would yeild 98% fuel @ 2500rpm.

moto3 - I would suspect that you would run a little leaner than me since I could smell how much richer I was running with the Denso Fuel pump v/s the stock (which I assume you still have). You'll want to start with all the PIM voltages @ 100% and pull out fuel if
you need to after seeing your wideband a/f numbers. Everycar is different and each mod does slightly different things to each car. Basically I'm saying leave your stock map in there, get on a dyno w/wideband, then add/remove fuel using the PIMS (easy way). It wouldn't be unreasonable to tune in 20 - 25rwhp just by removing fuel if you are running real rich, ie 9's:1 like I was initially.

Each 2.5% - 3% of fuel I pulled out brought the a/f ratio up about .5:1. ie if my ratio at 4000rpm was 9.5:1, pulling out 2.5% - 3% at 4000rpm yeilded a 10:1 ratio after correction. This will give you a ballpark figure for how much fuel to add/remove when you are using the
PIM Voltages to do it. **WARNING** Your results may vary, but this at least gives you a starting point.

----------------
TailHappy - hehe, I was exactly the same as you, wanted that 300hp number SOOOO BAAAD day 1, missed it by 15hp. That is why I replaced the hi-flow cat with SS MP & added the HKS twinpower, then came back 3 days later to shoot for the 300mark again! I went home happy cause I did hit it. The second day was a much better day for keeping the turbo's cool too! BTW I iced down the manifold and throttle body the entire time to help keep intake temps down since the intercooler was doing a bunch of nothing in a stationary car with a little fan blowing over it. Hard to simulate 80mph unless you dyno in a wind tunnel...(hrm...I gonna have to think about that one, if I get a dyno built into the garage of my next house, I wonder if I can get a wind tunnel too?!? It's only money, right?

----------------
forcefed1 - you are correct, the mods I've added since my last dyno are y-pipe, pulley's (alt/water) & FMIC. I plan to also add a main unorthodox pulley and replace the stock plugs with a set of NGK platinums, got a pair
of 7's and a pair of 9's which I think will be about right for my current config. Also a new clutch since my stock clutch is beginning to slip in 3rd and 4th after the transition. Instead of a kick in the *** from the 2nd turbo I get a slip of the clutch... no fun

My engine is stock (34k original miles), same with the turbo's. Once I re-check my a/f ratios with the new mods I'll definately be ready to do some timing adjustments, only problem is I have NO IDEA what I'm doing in that arena yet, so any pointers you have, or links to timing tuning of a rotary would be greatly appreciated!
