On auto Trader there is a 94 Silver R2 with 80.5k original engine supposed to be "immaculate in and out" do you think 17.5k is too much for this vehicle with the original engine?

Yeah, it's a decent price. $16.5 would be a great deal.

 

ehhh. Get him in the range on 16.5K or less. 17K or more seems like a little much...autotrader.com always has around 15 manual FD's though, its about as consistant as gravity..

 

Well... We are talking about a Silver R2 here... I say try to talk him down to 16.5 or 17.... But either way, crap I say its worth it...

If the rest of car is in good shape (paint, interior), definitely a good deal.

 

definitely check out the car to make sure everything is as immaculate as the owners says. a silver r2 may be rare but silvers aren't. i would personally negotiate down into the 16s at least.

 

15.5-16.5 is fair....but you will be nearing the time we all spend our life savings on repairs.

I don't know why everyone thinks these engines will go after 70 to 80k on them if they were taaken care of properly they'll last 100k plus. Most these motors go because there modded incorectly or poorly maintained. I know of a 93 R-1 with 100k on it still running all the stock components and rear wheel dyno figures at 50k and again at 100k were actualy higher than factory rear wheel figures. I personaly have two 94's one with 82k and one with 75k on them and see no reason to get 100k on either one of them.....the one with 82k has a coolant seeal leak but has been bandaided with the block seal treatment but has been holding on for 9k since the treatment. I did change to an aftermarket radiator and put the Evans coolant in it so we'll see how long it last.

 

If it has 80k on the original engine and turbos maybe you should reconsider. Even though it is a silver R2, the engine is prone to go at any time. Keep in mind that a typical FD motor with typical maintenance only lasts about 80-90k. And when you rebuild the motor you are not only looking to replace the motor but also various rubber hoses and other stuff that may need to be removed and replaced as well. My original motor went out at 79k, the previous owners had all service records and the car was maintained pretty well. If the apex seals don't go usually the water seals go, causing coolant to go into the engine. Also not only does the engine go bad, other things go bad on these cars too when there is a lot of miles on the chassis. The engine wiring harness goes bad, fuel injectors, pulsation damper, etc... Maybe you should talk him down to 14-15k or look for a car with lower mileage. That's just my opinion though.

i think that's because most of us out here (or at least i know i am) are into modifing as much as our "allowance" will let us and when you heavily modifiy a rotary most of the time you will shorten the length of the engine. It really depends on how the car was maintained before you and how you plan to modify it.

 

if that car is in the bay area (SF) it'd be sold by now.

Thanks for all your posts...I hesitated yesterday and told him that I would pass...So right after that there was this woman ready to buy it...I hope she knows what she is getting into $$$ wise and not just buying a sexy silver car....

I talked to the dealer today and told him that if her bank falls through with her loan he should call me because I have cash ready for him...

just offer the guy something a little extra, what is another 500% when we are talking thousands. slip the Salesman on teh side a couple hundred and tell him to make her go away. or tell him you will pay more for car banking it has good comrpession numbers.

Just called and told him "dude, I will give you 17k if you make the woman go away" just like you said...then he said "what about the turbos? you were worried about that" I said I would give you 17k for it and he will never see me again and he doesn't have to do dick to the car...that's 300 more than he is being offered...So he was all frantic and calling his bro asking what to do...so he said that he needs to figure out a way to "make her go away" so he said he would call me before noon tomorrow...

I just bought a 94 white RX-7 w/55k miles on it for $13k... 17k is about right bluebook wise, but there are better deals to be found.

I have been shopping like a mad person now for months and seems like everything here (in red, white, and blue land) is trashed or on its way out...I may be overlooking some but this is my experience as a buyer.

tomorrow will be the day I know if I am going to get it or not...if he says yes...then I fly up and drive it back...if no...I keep looking....Maybe I come over Japan and offer you 17k for yours!

 

Not to be a smart ***...simply pointing out what you just said. You basically just answered your own question. You have a '94 with a coolant seal leak at 82k miles. I'd say that engine is on it's way shortly. Hopefully it lasts longer...but nevertheless is on it's way out.
