Airbag Implications In Aftermarket Steering Wheel

Anyone know if you have to engage the airbag (ruin it) if you remove the factory steering wheel to replace it with an aftermarket jobbie?

I want an AM wheel, but I'd like to be able to strap the factory one back on if I ever decide to resell the car.

As in, that would be a silly thing for Mazda to do?

I THINK that answers my question. Let me make sure.

The airbag is not ruined when you detach the factory steering wheel and you CAN reattach it without incident in order to resell it, correct?

it just unplugs/replugs like any other device in the car.
MAKER SURE TO UNPLUG THE BATTERY THOUGH.
You are dealing with an explosive and it could easily hurt you if you mess with it.

forcefed,

Thanks for the confirmation man.

Much obliged. I'll make sure everything is shut down.

Do us a favor. Just in case there is a charge left in a capacitor somewhere, stand to the side when you remove it.

Some airbag info...

Definitely wear safety goggles and disconnect the battery. The bag fires off like a 12-guage at over 250mph, creating superheated sodium azide gas at 700 degrees. The only thing that can really set it off is a 12-volt signal to the inflator. I've thrown one across a parking lot before and nothing happens. Just tape off the pig-tail after removal. Most newer passenger-side modules operate by compressed gas, so they have a canister which could be punctured.
