Finding Top Dead Center

I took off my main drive pulley a week or so ago, and I made a mark on the pulley mount that the stock pulley mounts onto, but it looks like the Racing Beat pulley I got requires me to remove that mount, and attach the pully directly to the eccentric shaft, which is cool, because I shouldn't have to find Top Dead Center if I marked it wrong, because the pully will only go on in one position.

BUT

What if I was going to put the stock pulley back on and didn't have the pulley and mount marked? Is there a way to know by looking into the exhaust ports to see where the rotors (apex seals) are and know how they should be when at Top Dead Center?

ALSO

I need to know how to put my distributer back in with the dist. rotor in the correct position. I assume I put the engine at TDC and put the dist. rotor in the correct position and drop it in. How do I know where to have the rotor rotated too? At TDC Rotor1(front rotor) would be firing right???

Thanks for any help. I also have the factory manual, and Haynes Manual, so if you have page numbers that explain this stuff let me know.

THanks,

Derek

the key on the e-shaft should be in the 9 o clock position, if I'm not mistaken... Haven't had to do it for a while.

For the dist. you line up the dot on the drive gear for the dist with the mark on the dist. housing. Then drop in and it will turn slightly. That should be it. I know it tells you in the Haynes manual in the ingntion section. I don't have my book with me or I would give you the page number

First read this on the pulley removal replacement.
http://www.mazdatrix.com/faq/pulley.htm

Metallic Rock is right. Heres a pic that illustrates this.

If you accidentally remove the pulley from the hub and your not sure how it goes back on in relation to the timing marks??? The pen is pointing right between the two marks.

Or if you havent disturbed the distributor, remove the cap, rotor and sheild. Then look at the reluctor (the thing in the middle with 4 teeth). You see one has a slot in it where a roll pin goes that holds the reluctor in place. Turn the engine till that tooth aligns with the foward mag trigger as shown in the pic below. Then bolt your pulley on with the leading (0*) mark at the timing pin.
