Just had my stereo put in today, and the aerial will not rise when the tuner is selected. I told the guy before he got started, pay close attention to the antenna wiring because I know numerous people who've had a lame antenna after an installation. He says don't worry it shouldn't be a problem... blah blah blah. Sure enough, it's not operating.

With no working antenna I receive absolutely no stations whatsoever.

I know this question has popped up in the 2nd gen forum a few times, but a search has yeilded no results. Anyone have a cure for this problem? It's for an '89.

From the Panasonic head unit there's a blue wire that says in the manual it's for the antenna operation. He probably connected it, but from what I understand you have to modify it in some way to get it going.

i belive your antenna is a negative trigger which needs a relay

The antenna needs a switched ground to go up but aftermarket stereos provide switched power. You need to get a relay and wire it up like this:

I have the same problem. I bought my 7 from a guy in college who removed his after market stereo and amp. I replaced them with a Blaupunkt stereo and an amp. but the antenna will not go up when I power up the stereo, in fact if I have it manually extended it will retract.
Will this solution solve my problem? If so where can I get teh switch ground relay y'all are talking about and where does it go in the car? Near the antenna?

 

It's just a normal 12V relay available from any parts store. Wire it as per the diagram above and it'll work. The antenna's wire is in one of the plugs behind the head unit.

 

I found the correct relay at a Carquest Store and installed it this past weekend. It took about 4 hours to complete the install, most of this time working up the courage to cut the blue and blue/yellow wires and finish reconnecting everything and testing the antenna. IT WORKED!

Just a note, I printed out all the entries concerning this way to get the power antenna to work with an after market sound system. As I was reading through each entry I noticed that there were three different ways of connecting the wires and grounds to the relay. I don't know if they all work. I followed the instructions with the diagram and I now have a working power antenna with a Blaupunkdt radio/CD player.

Glad you got your antenna working.

For future reference, you didn't need to cut any wires. You can crimp a male spade terminal onto the head unit's antenna wire and plug it straight into the factory plug.

 

The 85 and 86 leads can be reveresed

the 30 and 87 leads can be reversed.

It all works the same either way.
