GTUs mod session...DTSS gets Owned!
Yo,
In preparation for the Grip/Drift event at Thunderhill Raceway on January 25th, the GTUs got a handful of modifications yesterday.
Where was the best place to bring my Baby? Rotary Racer's (Dana's) garage! Only the best work done...cheap too! *grin*
First on the list was to get rid of the dreaded DTSS rear steering bushings. It went suprisingly well...much props to Mazdatrix and their DTSS Installation insructions.
Here is a pic of the delrin bushing being pressed into the rear carrier:
Having a press in your garage makes life easier. Team GTUs does not skimp. *grin*
Here is what I think of the destroyed DTSS squishy bushings:
Byebye DTSS! Enjoy the garbage can! Heh.
Lastly, here's a picture of The Man: Dana. This guy pretty much singlehandedly installed onto my car yesterday:
Rear DTSS Eliminators
Racing Bear Rear Sway Bar
Energy Suspension polyurethane front A-arm bushings
Racing Beat Front Sway Bar
Mazdatrix adjustable front end links
Mazdaspeed lower arm bar
All done with a smile! *grin* Thanks again bro...my car wouldn't be half of what it is without your help.
Peace!
Kevin

hmm... WTF happened to my post?
Oh well, I'll re-ask:
First, NICE car. Gotta love the s5s
especially in GTUs form
How do you like the DTSS elimintators so far? I've been told that you end up with heaps of oversteer... is this the case? How about the Poly bushings?
And Where'd that banner come from! I want one for me!

Yo,
Wow! Lots of questions! *grin*
First off...it takes about 8-10m to take the front lip off. Not too bad.
The problem with my impressions on driving the GTUs now is that we did so many mods at once. I don't know if the improved turn in is the bushings, the bars, the eliminators.
My first impressions are that the car is much stiffer...any road imperfections and you're going to know about it. More vibration in the cabin, etc. I'm almost tempted to turn my Tokico's down from 4 to something softer.
We did a quick drift in the rain and the rear end totally stepped out...I thought for sure we were going to spin given our perpendicular situation. But nope, just caught it and drove on. I noticed that the car doesn't "load up" and spring back when you get it sideways. I likes.
The only real thing I can speak on is the installation of parts. Getting the stock bushings off the A Arm actually turned out to be the biggest bitch all day. It was the rear stock bushings that gave us the most troubles.
I checked the Forum and it looks like the standard way to take them off is with a butane torch...just light it on fire and let it burn for 15m then use a Dremel to get at the metal collar imbedded in the rubber.
Dana's home owner's association would probably frown on that...so we just Dremel'ed the hell out of it...then cracked it like a clam...and yanked it off. It was the most time-consuming and messy operation of the day. Everything else went fine.
I got the banner from Mazda Competition (Mazdaspeed)...but I don't think they're selling to the public any more. I have the same banner in my garage as well. I'm thinking of getting a Racing Beat banner too. *grin*

Yo,
We used the front oil cooler lines as support. Was that...bad?
*grin*
Um...there's these front frame rail dohickey things that we put the jack stands on. They're right up front, on either side of the undertray.
Now you guys better not go..."OMG, dude, that's the worse place you can put jackstands...your whole car will sag in the middle, causing irreparable damage!" 'Cause I don't want to hear it. *grin* The doors opened fine...Dana said it was okay...so...it's okay.
Nyah!

Yo,
Heh, what's funny is Dana and I talked about it. I'll wait until he's online before I start quoting prices. *grin*
He definitely has the tools and know-how. Dana had this cool tool that you use to take the Phillip head screws out of the rear disk brakes. You whack it with a hammer and it turns the screw off. I seriously think that would have taken me a /long/ time to get those off, probably stripping them out. We had to use the dead-blow to get them off....so no way could I have done it with my arms a Stanley screwdriver. *grin*
Neo, when did you get an FC? I think I remember you got a TII or something? Any pics?

No photos yet, not ready to debut it, but you'll see it at Thunderhill on Saturday.

Yo,
A big special
to Chris (Rotorlution formerly known as 89GTUs), who gave me a great deal on the aforementioned parts.
He actually bought the parts to put on his blaze red 1989 GTUs...but he sold it. The Karmic Wheel spins and the parts end up going on...a blaze red 1989 GTUs. *grin*
Thanks Chris! I'll try not to out-handle your TII with the parts on...I'll miss a shift or something. *wink*

Make sure to get pics from the track event. And report back with how your car feels when you have some real time driving on it's new limit.
btw-your car looks great, makes me hate living in the rust belt that much more
