Hey, I have been looking for quite some time now for someone, local, to polish my stock wheels. I have finally found one. However I have no idea what this service can cost. I have heard he does very good work. Can any of you help me out? Thanks alot.

I know this wasn't your question but I am telling you that it is not worth it for you to get your wheels polished.


It's a lot of work to do it and the upkeep for a nice shine will be a lot. I tried to polish one wheel and I gave up in an hour. I think with the correct tools its really not that bad of a job but it will still take hours and hours.

Why not just get other wheels or if you like the stock ones buy a chrome set from someone for cheap on the forum.

 

Stock polished wheels look good and if you don't put "wheel cleaner" on them or anything else other than just washing them they should look fine for quite a while. I wax my polished parts every ~6mo - 1yr and the look great after 2.5 yrs.

BUT, as Snook said I wouldn't waste my $$ getting the stockers polished. It WILL be expensive and IMHO you should just save up for some 17s, buy them when your tires are worn out.

what color Fd do you have??
I've seen some Fd's with the rims powdered coated black. look pretty badass IMO.

I like the stock wheels just the way they are. For some reason, it never crossed my mind to ever get the polished.

BTW: does it weaken the wheels when you polish them? after all, you gotta shave the wheels a bit...

 

My guess is that it will be very expensive. And very hard to care for. You'll need to get a clear coat if you want them to stay shiny.

Cast aluminum might not polish to the smooth shine you want. Casting leaves voids that will show up as pits or spots on the surface. They are squeeze cast, so they are probably better to polish than other wheels, but they still might not come out as pretty as you are hoping for.

Polishing them might make them stronger (or at least less crack prone) because it reduces stress rising bumps on the surface. You take away many places that a crack could start.

Well, i know there is less upkeep and initial cost for powdercoated wheels. However, my FD is red. I dont really know what color (if any) powdercoated wheel would look good on my car. I like aftermarket gunmetal rims, but i dont know how the stoclers would look gunmetal. ANybody have pics? If anyone has an opinion on what color stock wheel may look good on my car please share. I need ideas right now. Thanks for all the help so far!

why not chrome?

 

I got a quote for abt 125 per wheel for machining the wheel and polishing it. This includes removing curb rash and straightning the wheel if its bent. Too much for me.

 

i'm actually trying to sell my polished wheels...the previous owner did it, some people like it, i personally don't. i don't drive the car much so keeping it clean is not a big deal, specially in no ran cali. mainly when you wash the car you need to clean the wheels or you get water spots. other than that it looks fine. i have some pics on my website if you're interested. if you car is blue or black it'll look good.

oh, and i don't do any special wheel cleaning or anything..i wash and wax the car but since i don't care for the wheels much i don't do much to them except spray water on them and they're fine, so i don't think up keep is that big of a deal.

BATMAN has a brilliant black 3rd gen with powdercoated stockers. his whole car is black, looks awesome IMO.... and black or a dark gunmetal on a red FD looks good.
