Carbon Fiber Hoods

I have found a maker of carbon fiber products that is happy to produce cf hoods for the FC community. They are in tooling as we type. I don't want to viotale any forum rules, so if you are interested, visit HERE

The first ones are set to come out in approx 2 weeks, in both N/A and TII version.

What's the benefit of a CF hood vs the Aluminum hood on a TII?

Yo,

Dave, excellent job. I knew all it took was someone with some motivation down in SoCal to get it done. Why am I not surpised it was you? *grin*

I'm going to be a Doubting Thomas and not pre-order, but I am interested. I'm a stickler for fit and finish, I grew up on Fiber Image hoods, which I think are top notch. If I like what I see when the first ones are finished, I'll be in!

Thanks for getting this done and it was good seein' ya at SS5.

No problem, I totally agree with any of you that wish to wait to see the finish of them. I would if I were on the other side of the fence That is why I am getting the first N/A and the first TII hood so we can do write-up's on them both for all to see.

It's just like eBay, I wont even look at ads without pictures

And yes it is the black/grey fiber. No fru fru colors at this time

any idea what the weight is on the hoods? i know some of the cheapy places can remarkably make their CF hoods rather heavy.

Yo,

Dave, exactly. Fru fru carbon! *snicker* If you want a red hood...get a painted hood. Not red carbon. Bleh!

Weight is estimated at 14lbs. I will verify both hoods weight when I have them.

There isn't any material other than the fiberglass and CF used in these hoods with the exception of the metal inserts to screw into the hinges and latch. The weave is the standard checker pattern weave, not the diagonal style. The support frame under the hood is fiberglass, and the whole top of the hood is CF, and they are molded together.

Please, of all the things I have seen on this damn forum, I don't see high end CF hoods as rice. Would you call a Porsche 911 Turbo CF interior "Rice"? I don't know anyone that would personally. Does a 911 Turbo need weight reduction of some interior pieces? Not with 420hp it doesn't. It is purely for looks and style.

They are lighter than any stock hood, they are easy to paint (just rough sand the epoxy top coat and paint) if you want it painted to match the car, or look nice just plain old CF IMHO.

Anyway, I don't want to argue with people, if you don't like cf hoods, go post about how to check/set the TPS or which wheels look best for the 4000th time

is the proper smiley BTW

Yo,

CF hoods rice? Oh please! It's a performance mod. Light = Mo' Bettah. Just 'cause it looks cool as **** unpainted doesn't make it ricey.

Now if you just painted your stock hood black trying to make it /look/ like CF...now that's ricey as hell. Again, the look of performance but not the real deal.

I still want one!

the checker pattern is called a 'plain' weave. The diagonal is called a 'twill" weave.

theres also a weave called 'satin', probably wont be seeing any hoods made with that.

just so everyone knows

Another Q:
Are these hoods vacuum bagged? are these wet lay-up?

Good info OC_, thanks!

I will have to check on the fab process, but knowing the cost for bagging hoods, I don't think they are bagged.

I checked on the laying of the CF today, and they are just wet layed. Bagging them would run about $10K, and um, there isn't any hood worth $10K out of my pockets

They will look very nice and very shiny when finished. Pics of the finished first few should be ready in 2 weeks!
