Restoration of sun-faded plastic parts

Howdy!
I was recently given a 1980 RX7 that had been sitting in the sun for about 8 years. A lot of the black plastic interior parts were pretty sun bleached, but not cracking or brittle, so I decided to try some Fiebing's leather dye to restore the black color. Well, it worked like a charm, I'm happy to say. Once the dye soaked in real well, I wiped it off with a rag until no more black color came off, then let it dry overnight before armor-all was applied. Check out the results! -WG

Oops... you can't link to a file on your harddrive, you'll have to upload it somewhere first and then link to it.

Would like to see the pics, could this work on the burgundy interior as well. (Not in black of course)

Let's try this again. I think burgundy would be harder to match than black. You may have to dye ALL the pieces to get them to match. The photo shows the faded piece and a piece after being dyed. -WG

Wow! That's a huge difference. Not a bad idea for those that need to freshen up the look of their interior. Have any pics of the completed interior in the car?

I'll take some today and post them. I also replaced the dash with a totally cherry one I got out of a junkyard. I was there the other day and I'll be damned if there isn't ANOTHER perfect dash down there! I'm going to pull it tomorrow, just to have another cherry dash to fit '80. Thanks for the compliment! -WG

Interior pics

Finally took some pics. Pardon the filthy steering wheel. This car is a daily driven work-in-progress. It sat in the sun for 10 years.

That's my '72 RX3 coupe there in the garage.

Fiebing's leather dye can be found at most leather supply stores. Get a couple extra applicators as you don't want to reuse them. Be sure to apply the stuff in a well-ventilated area. Good luck!
