What are your regards on Autometer Phantom Guages(In particular the EGT)

I plan on getting the A/F Ratio #5775 (The one on the left of the pic)

Also planning on getting the Street Series Pyrometer Kit 0-1600 F, with Included probe. #5744

Has anybody had good experiences with Autometer gauges? Phantom, In particular? I hear they suck, I hear they are good, I'm confused.

With our exhaust temps running as high as 1,700 - 2000 F at full throttle and high rpm as compared to 1,100 - 1,400 F for a four-stroke reciprocating engine I'm worried with the potential buy on this EGT Gauge, It only goes to 1600 F, well below the 2000 F mark that I will be reaching at full launch. Is It something to concern myself with? Or am I alright?

I plan on Installing my Hi-Flow Fuel Pump, Port my Manifolds and put In fresh plugs before I zero In my S-AFC to my car. From there I will be relying on these gauges (some what) from there on.

The A\F gauge is a nice on my christmas tree!! It sucks ***! Most EGT gauges only run up to 1600 deg because thats where most pistion engines melt down, do you self a favor and by some Quality gages.

i've tuned many SAFC with a greddy EGT and A\F! the greddy A\F comes with a 02 sensor and pretty close to a Wideband on our local dyno. It's nice to see Numbers on a A\F gauge not a pink floyed show

Youir motor shouldn't go over 1600 F anyhow... true, an NA rotary running some wild porting will break that barrier... but, when I had my 60-1 tuned to 11.8:1 under EVERY load point, I never went about 1500, so my that gauge worked fine for me. Also, I don't care what people say about the AFR either, its a safetey measure. you lose an injector under WOT and it MAY save your engine....

They aren't the best gauges, but, if you can't afford anything more, they are ok. I have them right now in my 20B, but I also have a wideband o2 sensor from FJO to make sure everything is correct first. I wouldn't tune my motor on those gauges, but as a decent day to day safety reminder, they are fine.

If you want to shoot me a PM, I have that exact a/f gauge sitting in my garage that I've never hooked up cause I'm getting a wideband. There was a local guy that was going to buy it but he hasnt given me any $ so if your interested I still have it.

BTW - How much is that full egt kit that your looking at???

I have read from people who have used both (greddy and autometer) that the autometer pro unit reacts quicker than the greddy unit. I don't know why everyone is so quck to badmouth autometer. The only reason I haven't decided to buy one is because of the 1600 F max reading. There is a lot of good discussion about EGTs and EGT gauges in the forum archives.

Kurgan- where is your EGT probe mounted?

About 6-8" Back from the turbo outlet on the 60-1 turbo. My car was tuned to an AFR of about 11.1:1 across the board... so that may account for some of the lower readings. If you have problems with it going to high, just move it back a bit... and yes, the street comp probe has been proven to react faster than the Greddy unit.

Now, does anyone wanna buy my Phantom Boost gauge? Its like new... I want a greddy metric unit since everything I'm doing is in metric

I probably would have took It off you b'c I plan on running all Phantom. Don't have Turbo so that would not be good to me. Let me ask around.

I figured you had it mounted behind the turbo. Usually that will reduce your readings by about 100 C. This will work ok if you are just using the gauge as a reference, but if you are tuning with it then it just adds to the guess work. I would rather mount it before the turbo and get a more accurate read.

If you have not made a decision yet, check out VDO gauges. I have heard that they are decent quality at a reasonable price. I ordered 3 to go in my dash, under the stock single unit stereo.

I still don't understand tuning with an EGT gauge... its measuring the temperature after the combustion and expansion strokes.... this means that the fuel has already been ignited.. if you're lean, it's too late. I guess an o2 sensor does the same thing, I just don't see the accuracy in running a single EGT gauge before the turbo... you'd have to have one per rotor if you are THAT picky about it...

Phantom's look good, but if you are making the investment, get decent equipment. VDO is better than the lower end Autometer gauges, but Autometer DOES make decent gauges, like the ultralites and such....

Then, how for example, do Phantoms and Ultralites differ besides looks? Is one higher end over the other?

Exactly. The ultralites are more expensive, not a lot though, and they are more accurate (net knowledge here, I don't own any ultralites). If you call up autometer, they can tell you the differences (I did this, but it was a year or so ago, so I don't want to post erroneous information).

Don't bother with the "street" probe.&nbsp Spring money for the "comp" or "pro" series probes, as these react a lot faster.&nbsp Rumor has it the "comp" is the same as the "pro" series but slightly cheaper.
