what type of motor oil do u guys use or suggest in ur stock 2nd gen n/t's? my previous 2nd gen i used a 10w30 penzoil. it was fairly cheap, and effective. i changed regularly at 1500 miles. what type do u guys find effective and how often do u change? thanks.

Run a search and you'll find where this has been discussed in detail many times before. But I've never seen anyone recommend Quaker State or Penzoil. But then everyone has an opinion and you know what they're like! Every 3K miles is fine. Change the filter too and don't use Frams. BTW I use Havoline 10-30 in the winter months and 20-50 in the summer.

 

10w-30 in my daily driver cars. The heavy viscosity oil is nice, but tends to be too heavy to lubricate as well for overall longevity. Plus the MOP can get more volume of oil with a lower viscosity. I used SAE 50 in my old TII "driven solely to beat on" car mostly because it was ran real hard.

 

Search forums and FAQ, covered before. Any API certified oil will be good. The FAQ has a list of good synthetics. Typically you use 10w-30 (thin) or 20w-50 (thick), makes only a little difference. The owner's manual says to change every 7500 miles, though you can change every 5000 to be safe. Anything less is 100% made-up opinion/marketing/rumor/tradition and useless, but it won't hurt. And look up the literally 50 other maintenance items. That's far more important than your motor oil. FWIW I use 10w30 Royal Purple (a good synthetic), since I figure the 0.5mpg saved lets me break even on price after 7500 miles.

 

i could have sworn that in my origanl 86 owners manual is stresses to change every 1500. i never argued that fact since 1 gal of penz was only 10 bucks plus 8 for a filter wasnt a big deal. the previous owner said every 1500 as well and so did another 2nd gen owner. interesting.

 

i always change oil and filter at same time ( every 1.5k like i said ) and i dont plan on running the car in the winter. i would say it would be ran in 45-90 degree temps (min-max) during the sprins summer and fall. and if u dont suggest fram filter what would u sugg for a filter? the car only has 52k orig miles and id like to do my best to preserve it. im a cross country truck driver and only get to drive i once every 5 - 6 weeks.

 

my first car had had the oil changed in 50k miles. now its spinning 230+k miles on it. the filter just gets changed and the thing gets revved the **** out of it.


now i got another 7, i use just penzoil 10w30.


word of warning, dont go synth unless you engine originally came with it. forget about if it was designed for it. im saying from day one what oil was it using. keep using it.

I use Castrol GTX 10w-40. Changed every 3000 to 4000 miles.

 

Synthetic oils when injected into the rotor housing are known to gum up the rotors because it doesnt burn as easily as the non-syn's. Now if you have the omp disconnected you can use synthetics without a problem. Synthetics are also know to clean up old oil in spots where it might cause a leak, so unless you have used it since day one, be careful switching from one to the other.

castrol 20-50 gtx, just removed the omp this week. Gonna switch to a mobil1 synthetic.

That's a waste of money IMO, but hey, whatever floats your boat. Besides, I own a lot of big-oil company stock, so the more money you waste the more I make, hehehe.

Penzoil? That stuffs **** man, I wouldn't even let a droplet of cheap oil in my engine. Castrol gtx is a bit better then cheap stuff, but I still wouldn't use it. Don't ask me why but I just have a thing for having expensive oil in my engine. I've used royal purple and redline. Both worked awesome. I'm currently running redline.

Redline is god, Royal purple is crap, for non synthetic oil Castrol is good

any us made base stock 3 synthetic oil is junk... (Mobil 1, castrol syntec, valvoline syn etc)

Thus why I use ELF/total... it is French made base stock 4/5 REAL synthetic oil

whats the best oil used for pre mixing? i remember seeing a thread a while back about an fd whos omp died and he didnt know but since he had been premixing his fuel it saved his engine.
