What is the best oil and oil filter to go into my 87 sport?

 

best is a relative term.......

new oil, frequently, would be the "best"

Syntehtic, some would argue is the best, but its also the most expensive\
Conventional, some would argue is the best, and its VERY affordable

So to save the argument, lets just say use a mixture of the two......

 

Mazda OEM Filter(Approx. $6.00 Mazda Dealership) has been proven to be one of the best oil filters out there as of now. Do not use FRAM, as they do not filter as well.

Castrol GTX 10W30 for the winter.
Castrol GTX 20W50 for the summer.
(Or some use 20W50 all year long, but I live in a state where it goes below 0 F)
$10.00 at your local Walmart store, and you are good to go.

Castrol GTX is the most commonly used.

 

I would second DO NOT USE FRAM. They're the only oil filter I've ever heard of disintegrating and leaving paper bits in an engine. Hint: Paper blocks oil passages.

I tend to use WIX filters, and Castrol GTX. Again, 20W-50 for summer, 10W-30 for winter (I had a spare bottle of 20W-50, and for fun tried to drain it in -10F weather - it was basically a solid).

i searched over the internet and all they had were some Bosch and Denso one, are they as good as the mazda oem one?

I put Castrol oil and a Wix filter into my FC everytime.

 

I use a Mobil 1 fuel filter. I would go with the OEM filter, but no matter what you get, make sure it's high quality.

Also, I use Castrol GTX (20-50 right now in TN). I've heard nothing but good things about it.

any good low ash dino oil will be fine, check and top off every so many miles and change as directed by owners manual.

Supertech filters (wally's) are good to and cheap.

 

I believe Nippon creates them.

 

RX7.com caries Idemitsu Oil the oil that Mazda uses from the factory and used in the 24 hours of Le Mans...I've used it for a while. I figure if it can withstand the abuse of the 24h Le Mans, it can handle just about anything I through at it. Also Ari Yallon in the Stars and Stripes RX7.com sponsored 3rd gen uses it.

Nippon is usually mentioned as "Nippon Denso" and actually means "Japan" rather than company name

Mazda's oil filter has been made by a half dozen different companies. Most recently Tennex.

There is no after market filter that is even half as good as the Mazda OEM oil filters. Mazda specifies quite a few things in the filter that most aftermarket companies don't even consider (like twice the filter area when comparied to a Wix and three times the filter area of a Fram) and rubberized silicon anti drain back valves (that only a very few aftermarket filters have.


Supertech filters are just Wix filters and nothing to write home about. Have you sent your oil for analysis that you claim they are good???

 

guess your motor is only worth $20 oil changes with the wrong oil.

Why would anyone use single weight oil these days??? Do you also have Bias ply tires on the car???

The A6000-104645 looks to be simular to the Tennex filter, but without seeing the label or cutting it open it is hard to tell for sure

 

I've had pretty good luck with Castrol Tection Extra (15w-40 HDEO, industrial grade, advertised as super-low-ash) in my old GSL-SE with 200K original miles. Oil Analysis was always very good, and the Tection did not tend to shear out of grade as much as the Mobil DC 20w-50 or Castrol GTX 20-50 (usually ended up a mid to thin 30wt by 3K miles). Also ran Royal Purple 15w-40 Diesel formula in the same car, also with excellent results and great performance--never fouled a plug, even got up to 25mpg on the highway.

This new engine in the GTUs has had cheap-o 5w-30 break in oil in it for 500 miles with great oil analysis. I have been running Royal Purple Racing 21 since then (similar to 5w-30), will be doing another oil analysis this week. I plan on changing back to the Castrol Tection Extra 15w-40 as a baseline to compare plug appearance, mileage, and wear levels that show up in the oil over time. Diesel oils also tend to be very robust in their additive packs, remain constant in advertised viscosity (VI @ 100C), and can handle fuel dilusion pretty well.

We'll see. I have 115 hard autocross laps on this oil change interval, and almost exactly 2K miles.

Edit-- I usually rotate betwen Mazda, K&N Gold, and Wal-Mart (SuperTech) filters. ST filters are made by Champion Laboratories, BTW, and are similar if not identical if you cut them open to Bosch, STP, ValuCraft, AC Delco, and Champion "regular" filters. Champion Labs also makes K&N Gold filters and Mobil 1 Extended Performance filters. Wix makes NAPA filters, Purolator makes all of their Purolator line as well as the cheap Pep Boys "Pro Line" and SuperFlo. Honeywell/FRAM makes all Fram-packaged filters and all pre-mid-'05 Honda US filters. Makes you think.......
