Only thing left is to "back port" the wastegate. Sould I try to enlarge the ports anymore?

Would there be any advantage or disadvantage into recessing the Divider further into the manifold?

I think it looks great

I've been planning to do the same kind of work on mine.

how long did that all that work take you? Want to give us a write up of how it went for you? I've never pulled my turbo, and I'm wondering how much work it's going to be.

Turbo disassembly took 15 minutes. The proting to the exhaust manifold took about 2 hours. I use a pneumatic grinder with 1/4" carbide burr bits (6 for 30.00 on Ebay).

The turbine manifold took about 3 hours, using the pics on ww.FC3S-PRO.com as a reference.

The turbo rebuild kit will be here Wednesday so I have to beadblast everything to clean it up

There aren't many knowledgable people left on this forum, so you're probably not going to get a decent response.

Be assure that that when/if I do that over christmas I'll be looking at your post.

what exactly is the advantages to porting the exhaust mani and what does removing the twin scroll do? sorry im a noob at some of this stuff. It only took 15 min to take the turbo off? just wondering cuz i just got an upgraded s4 turbo and wanted to know about the difficulty of install. Heck if porting the manifold is really worth it I might as well do that too while i'm at it.

Thanks,
Aaron

Impressive!!

I did port the manifold, but I doesn't look like yours Basically I math ported the smaller one the tthe size of the bigger one. On the waste gate, I can't really tell from the pic, but on mine I can roughly squeeze my thumb!!

I haven't install everything back yet (engine is in the "rebuild" process), but your looks way better then mine!! I'll try to take pics.....

I should Clarify, Only took 15 minutes to disassemble/remove cartridge assembly from the manifold. The turbo and manifold were removed with the engine when it was pulled from the car.

The 87-88 Manifold is VERY restrictive and limits your maximum boost.

More pics later when I disassemble the Cartridge assembly and bead blast it clean.

With credit to: http://fc3s-pro.com/TECH/HOWTO/howto.html

removal of the twin-scoll system allows for better exhaust flow through the turbo exhaust manifold. There is a slight loss in low-end power, but this mod will benefit those running very open exhaust systems.

My WAG at a definition:
A twin scroll system is aimed at reducing turbo lag under acceleration, by reducint the flow area at low rpm's

I found another definition:

Rated at 180hp for it's 6 year life span the 13B delivers punch that only a turbocharged rotary can deliver. Smooth & turbine like in nature, the rotary engine gives the driver silent running with the minimum of fuss. The twin scroll turbo enables excellent low to mid response aswell as top end power.

How does it work ? The twin scroll entry point has one chamber closed off at low to medium rev's in order to obtain a higher air speed through the smaller than normal passageway. The result is very effective in reducing turbo lag. At a pre-determined engine speed the second intake chamber of the comes “on-line” to add full boost. The result is effortless performance combined with the rotaries natural smoothness & flexibility

And another explanation:

The Turbo 13B had a further rework of the twin scroll idea. Previously the two exhausts from the two rotors had been combined into one track before being led to the low speed scroll (hitting the power turbo at a right angle) or the high speed scroll, (straight through conventional angle).

Hey Banz...

Thanks for the pix and the terminology. I have nothing to offer to you except more questions. I mean, I always figured the stock 87T2 exhaust manifiold and turbo were dogs that needed to be replaced if you were serious going to get serious about boost.

Other than cost, was there a reason you didn't invest in an aftermarket manifold?

If you had decided to go with an aftermarket unit, which do you suppose you would have picked, and why.

Again, thanks for the demo effort and typing in the defs. That's a mark of style and intelligence!

Nat

Right now I am working with what I have in the shop:
Budget:
87 TII : 600
"Core Motor": 275
Walbro 255 pump: 75
Gaskets: 175
Motor Mounts: 50
Carbide Bits: 30
Turbo Rebuild Kit: 127
S5 Pulsation Damper: 145
FCD: 50
Fuel Injector Cleaning: 125
Misc Chemicals and Supplies: 60
90 JSPEC TII Intake: 90
HD TID: 20

Total: 1822

This should give me a decent start, IF the engine runs decent, I will baseline dyno it. Then the next stage will be a standalone ECU, then I will go all out. This will get me a driving RX-7 while I complete the GFH (GXL From Hell) project.

Right now we have 4 engines in the shop and only one is ready to go ( My Pineappple NA engine for the GFH)
