I don't have an RX-7, but I do have a set of third gen rims on my car and one of them is cracking. If it is so widely known that FD rims are proned to cracking, than why does everyone give me the "WTF?" look when I just want to buy one?! I have been trying to find one replacement rim for over a month. Surely you guys have encountered this problem....

I don't know where, but someone was selling one fd rim. I can't remember if it was on ebay, thepartstrader, or on this board. Where is it cracking at? I have never heard of this problem. Let me know where so I can check my rims too.

Remember there are at least two differnt FD wheels, that look alike. When the early ones started cracking, Mazda replaced them with a beefed up (and slightly heavier) version

Most people usually sell rims in sets. I've only seen 1 person selling "loosies" over the past few years. You may want to try junkyards.

Actually the early wheels Mazda outsourced from an outside supplier and when they had QC/cracking Probs Mazda started making their own - There are very few of the poorer ones around. the Mazda ones are only an once or two heavier (though I understand the early ones vaired ALOT )

This was taken from "Mazda RX7 Performnace Handbook" by Mike Ancas ( http://www.speednation.com/ might as well give them a plug, hehe), page 54. Sorry - scanner not hooked up.

Not saying that thses guys are the end all of RX7 knowledge, but it does provide a neat photo comparison of the two different types.

Anyways, just watch for the differences is the important thing.

How do you know if you got early or later edition rims?
Just incase you got a pair but don't know what year car it came from.

Great picture comparison. Now can anyone tell me why there were two different rims, one for 5 speed and one for A/T Tranny cars? What was the difference there and which is the better one?

You might want to try a thread in the FS section, saying you're looking for two or three other people with cracked FD rims to go in with you and buy a full set from someone. If this is such a common problem, then it shouldn't be too hard to do this.
