My NA-TII swap experience

Well, after losing an apex seal a couple of weeks ago, my GTU is now running again as a TII. I had been wanting to do a TII swap for some time, but never really gathered any parts until the past two weeks.

This is the first NA->TII conversion I've done and as easy as it is, it's probably not going to be my last

I also did mine extremely cheap. I'm not a cheap guy, but the parts fell into my lap at incredible prices! Here's a rundown of what it cost me:

$400 - 90 TII A-Spec engine (including RP down/mid pipe)
$125 - 90 TII ECU
FREE - J-Spec TII tranny (got for doing a motor swap)
FREE - TII Driveshaft (was hanging around the garage)
$40 - Greddy boost gauge
$100 - Mazdacomp Comp diff and motor mounts
FREE - TII diff and axles (trading NA tranny for it)
$122 - HKS F-CON (yup... $122.00)
for a total of: $787 (I like that number for some reason)

If I deduct the parts I've sold from the car:
-$325 - NA tranny that was in the GTU (sold)
-$140 - two housings and rotor from GTU (sold)
-$40 - fuel rail (sold)
we get a total of $282 is my out of pocket expenses to do the swap

If you've ever done a motor swap before, you can do the NA->TII swap with ease. The TII bolts in exactly where the NA came out, and with the exception of extending the O2 lead and running a separate shielded wire for the knock sensor, the NA wiring harness remains untouched.

Items to change:
drivetrain - everything from the motor to diff and halfshafts (not as bad as it sounds)
ECU - add knock sensor wire and extend O2 and BAC (if you use BAC)
Tranny - extend the wires for the backup and 5th gear switch
Boost sensor - NA sensors are different
Brake booster CHECK VALVE - commonly overlooked. Boost from the turbo and brake boosters don't mix. The check valve ensures no positive pressure will get into your brake booster.

In a nutshell, that's it. I dropped the motor on the mounts Saturday afternoon and it was running Sunday evening even working at a very liesurely pace.

Yes, the car will run - rather well I might add, with the NA ECU still in place

Pics? OK. more when I get my diff in and can move it out of the garage.
Pictures (~370k each) can be found at:

It really is a fairly simple thing to do, I don't know why everyone belive's it's so impossible. Have all the parts and it's a weekend project!

Whats the blu stuff around your wiring harness? Im doing my swap right now too, glad to hear its not hard. half the battle is getting the parts.

Rico05, that's not me. That's Brandon Matthews (No7Yet). I'm 27

1Revvin7, the Blue stuff is blue electrical tape. The harness was starting to show it's age, I looked over at my toolbox and saw the tape...looked back at the harness....back at the tape...and ended up re-wrapping my harness

I've got a TII pump sitting in the window sill for it. Forgot to mention that.

I'm gonna take car of a few odds and ends this evening like extending the backup light leads on the tranny and running my knock sensor wire. The diff will go in this weekend and it will move under it's own power again WOOHOO!

It also helps when there's 6 RX-7s at your house

Keep in mind that this is a Series V car. Series IV is a LITTLE harder. It can be done, but don't take it too lightly. Also, his costs are NOT typical.

For the series IV cars, will it "run" with the N/A ecu? Also, are the wiring harnesses simmilar enough to warrant just running a few extra wires, and not buying/rerouting a whole new harness, much like you did with your Series V?

Good question. I was thinking about doing a good writeup to do a complete conversion (keep all emmissions, etc.) on the 89-91 cars. I've got FSM's for both, so I'll map out the ECU plugs and post what needs to be added or changed.

Sledgehammer: that would be cool if you did that man... ....I'm gonna be doing the most ghetto of TII swaps ever, engine only... with a N/A flywheel and clutch... keep the N/A driveline...

I've been busy getting the car ready this past week. I'm gonna sit down with the FSMs this weekend and map out the differences between the NA and TII harnesses.

I installed the TII diff, comp diff mount, ECU and boost gauge last night and drove it to work this morning. It's running pretty rich right now, as it shoots fire whenever the hell it wants to. I found myself doing nothing but barely touching the throttle when a cop got behind me this morning. It still shot flames through the N1 silencer, but he didn't do anything. maybe he thought my car was fubarred

Oh yeah...it's farkin fast as hell! I kept myself governed at .5bar, 3/4 throttle and a limit of 6k, and still walked a Kawi that was messing with me on the way to work. (Not a sportbike, but a big cafe bike)

Still using the same SPAL 16" e-fan I've been using. The weird thing is, the TII runs about 10 degrees C cooler than the N/A. (82C vs. 90C)

I was about to do this swap but backed out at the last minute due to what some friends at shops said.

They said i can't use the 86 ECU and 86 Harness that came on my car? Because it doesn't have the settings for putting in more fuel underboost or something/???

help me out here plz. IM looking to do it still, only this winter.

Getting a harness and ecu TII for a swap is not too hard

I sold 2 sets
and I see them on Ebay all the Time

I did the swao using the N/A drivetrain
and I can tell you I love! the NA tranny's gear ratio
when used with the TII motor
and shifting is easier on the NA tranny

But the NA tranny is weak after 225 HP
I broke 2

search for my Thread
on using a NA drivetrain with a TII motor
But as I have learned you do not need to swap out the counterwieght just the fywheel....as long they from the same series

sledge, if you know of any cmoplete write ups in existence for making this kind of swap, then would you mind directing me towards one, and what is a realistic price for the swap, not your utopian dreamland under 800 dollar price?

I've been reading some past posts through the site's search and I've got a question about the NA drivetrain when using a turbo motor...from what i have read some the NA stuff fits, others don't...the main components in my NA have been modded already such as the Centerforce dual friction clutch and RB aluminum flywheel. SO, will a turbo motor fit my NA tranny with that clutch and flywheel? I'd REALLY love to keep that flywheel because it's only a few months old and I really like the way this drivetrain feels with it. BTW, the car is an '88. Will it all fit the way it is or will I have to get a Turbo counterweight for RB's NA aluminum flywheel??

Thanks,
Jon

GREAT, one last question, as far as swapping in the motor you say I can only use the 87-88 TII motor so everything will fit...what if I get a JDM motor since all 2nd gens there are TII's. Should I assume that all JDM motors before the revision in '89 will fit?? The dollar to yen is great now and my brother imports a lot of parts from Japan for WRX's at the shop so an imported motor is probably what I'm looking at.

Thanks again!!

hmm.... question:
Say I was gonna do my ghetto swap on a series 5 (keep the driveline I've got for now...) All I NEED is a turbo motor (with all the bits), MAF, TII ECU, and most likely a performance N/A clutch...

And then I just swap the flywheels (my old N/A flywheel onto the new turbo engine (both series five)) and install it (lengthening the boost sensor wire) and then plug in the turbo ECU?

kabooski, you've done this, is this right??
