When I release the throttle while still on gear (engine brake), I hear a ticking noise. (Tick tick tick tick tick). As soon as I press the throttle or the clutch it stops.

When the temp is cold it does not do it but when temp reaches normal it does it.

What could it be? I suspect that its' the diff.

 

I really hate the noise. Anyone had the same prob?

i get the same noise on decceleration and when i'm in neutral when i let off the gas and the rpms drop.i believe the noise is coming from the area where the turbo's are.

 

I've been getting the same thing. Sounds like its coming from the dash - maybe the tach? Could be cold weater we're having here lately. ?????????

 

I get the same noise. I always thought it was an exhaust leak but I took it to a good mechanic and he said it didnt have leaks and that he couldnt find the reason for the noise. I have always suspected its a cracked exhaust manifold but I havnt had a rotary mechanic tell me what it is.

 

i believe it can be that since i did the atf trick a couple of times and i had smoke pouring out from that area when i was doing it!

 

This was part of a TSB, it is a check valve within one of the metal pipes along the driver's side of the firewall. You can replace it (look it up in the TSB list to find out which one), but it is of no consequence other than the ticking noise.

The TSB adds a rubber isolator to the mounting point that holds the brake booster line. You can't keep the valve from fluttering/ticking, but the isolator does a good job of removing the noise from the cabin. For $5-$15 and a few minuts, it is a good thing to do.

F285-13-363 - Rubber Mounting - about $11 (a "stud") - this is the only part you have to order from Mazda
9994-00-600 - Flange Nut - about $2 - yes, for a single brass 10mm nut! A good place to save $2, if you don't mind a trip to the hardware store, or rummaging through that big bin of spare hardware you have.

Install (5 mins)
Need a 10mm socket, and crescent wrench (not sure of size)

there is a metal vacuum pipe that runs along the top of the firewall. It is held on with two stamped metal brackets. The passenger end bracket has the engine ground on it. Both ends have easy access. This is the metal tube that the brake booster line, with the shuttle valve in it, connects to.
1. Remove the 10mm bolt from the drivers side bracket - toss it, swallow it, or add it to the big bin of misc hardware you have. Er, don't actually swallow it.
2. Loosen the 10mm bolt on the passenger side.
3. Screw the rubber isolator stud into the firewall where the driver's side bolt came from.
4. place the driver's side bracket on the other end of the stud
5. secure with the flange nut.
6. tighten the passenger side bolt again.

done.

 

YEAH! That's the one. I knew someone would post it....weird, i haven't done this, but i don't have the clicking. Oh well, good for me!

My noise is loud so it is more like what 'zoomzoom' and 'turborotarypower' were talking about.

to 'turborotarypower' : What is an atf trick ?? and from where did you see smoke coming out : the manifold ??

to 'ech' : Thanks for the detailed description of installing a rubber isolator. I will do that.... but I think my noise is something different because it does not come from the dash.

 

the smoke was coming from the exhaust manifold/turbo area. the atf trick is when you have the engine suck auto trans fluid in and shut the car off so it breaks all the carbon build up in the engine,but i use gm top engine clean instead of atf!

 

Yeah i see lots of smoke down there too when i do the ATF, damned exhaust leak or manifold. No time to figgure it out right now.

Do the TSB, very easy fix. The rubber isolated bolt quiets the ticking/buzzing.

I have noticed a spot of carbon build up on my prespool actuator arm. It appears that there is an exhaust leak right there. I also here a ticking noise, but since the car is loud inside anyway, I can't tell if it goes through all of the throttle range or if it is just at idle. I have heard the dash ticking before, but it sounds more like an old loose cable driven tach. I think that I am used that noise because I can't remember the last time I heard it. As for my ticking noise, to me it sounds like an ignition tick, but I have not been able to isolate it's origin. I have tried a stethosope, but I could only narrow it down to the power steering or A/C, though I doubt that either one is making the tick. The tick seems to be related to engine speed.

 

i took my car apart and found the problem to be an blown turbo manifold gasket.

 

That should have been a lot of work.

How bad is that??? Can it have bad consequences?

Is it very difficult to replace?

 

I've had a clicking souns coming from the air pump when you let off the throttle. When the fan stops it makes a clicking noise. Maybe it's only me...

 

I may have ANSWER to your CLICK NOISEs under the hood. Couple of years ago. My Car had the same symptoms. At Idle it would, " click click click click"
but when you reved or drove it would go away.
but as soon as it idled click click click. anyways...

One night I popped the hood, and saw a spark.
that was making the clicking NOISE..
IT was a Electrical Arch from the head of the
spark plug head to the Upper intake manifold..

The problem was a Bad spark plug wire. had a slight
cut in the boot housing.. And Electric spark was arching
to the Manifold.... Was simple FiX... Just changed
spark plug wires...

Hope that helps.. But if it clicking.. Pop the hood at
night and look for a spark....

exhaust leaks are the most common causes of tick noises. as for replacing the gasket i need it a pain in the ***!! when i was there i found i need a intake manifold gasket because it was blown in 3 places and my turbo manifold has some major cracks which cause my gasket to blow!
