Alternators Interchange
Will all alternators from 1st generations interchange? I would like to install a 80 amp on mine to replace the 50 amp thats on it now. Thanks to all in advanced.

yes they will all interchange, actually I run a second gen alternator on my 80. You need to get rid of the fusible links and replace them with a fuse block from a second gen or 626, or whatever you can find.
by the way, what first gen has a 80 amp alternator? just curious.

Same bolt but different spacer AND the wiring into the clip is also slightly different if you've got a '79 or '80. I've got the diagram that Ari scratched out for me somewhere in my cold garage. I'll get it tomorrow along with the DIN pin breakdown for all the stereo nuts out there if anyone's interested. Now, it's nappy time....yawn....

The '84-85 alternator plugged right in to my '80 wiring harness!
So did the '88 Subaru (Hitachi) alternator!
And BTW - The late 1st-gen units were only 65 amps, although mine did put out 75a measured at the output wire. It's not as bad as you may htink because the stock '79-80 unit wasn't 50a, it was 45 45 ain't nuff when you've got an MSD and an electric fan to worry about, in addition to driving at night with the heat on full blast and the rear defog on and the wipers going and and and..! Let's just say it's a good thing our cars have such enormous batteries!
