I'm not sure what you mean by "gear sound". If you mean the rattle that goes along with a short-shifter, just add a couple strips of dyna-mat along the base of the shifter. Got rid of my rattle and helped a few other forum members as well.

Just installed a short shifter with dyna-mat and I get now the same humming gear sound under acceleration:-( Its not the usual short shifter rattle.
Without the short shifter is was fine.

I got the B&M short shifter I and don't hear those noises that you guys are talking about. My engine, BOV, and exhaust muffles any noise that the tranny would make under WOT so maybe I just can't hear it.

airn,

i've got the B&M also, and mine did that, too. that was the first thing i noticed after i put it in. it either doesn't do it anymore, or i've just gotten used to it and don't notice it anymore.

quick solution: turn your radio up

I've got the B&M as well. Occationally it will rattle at idle, but I haven't noticed it for a while. Never heard a "gear sound" or "grinding" sound from it.

My B&M rattles at RPMs below ~2500. And I can hear some rattling at idle. No biggie.

Go to this link for a discussion of the short shifter rattling issue:

http://www.mazdatrix.com/shiftrat.htm

Many brands of short shifters give the rattling sound. Some people have reported that their short shifters rattled at initial installation but eventually went quiet after about 500 miles. Others have reported that Dynamat solved the rattling problem. It's a "hit-or-miss" issue.
