secondaries (sometimes they open sometimes they don't)

I have a problem with my carb, (I am going to rebuild it eventually). Lately I cannot feel my secondaries open, and acceleration in 3rd and especially 4th and 5th gears is very slow. However, sometimes I can feel them open and it will pull to red line very quickly.

I have a header, and my rats nest is removed (except I just recently put back my two vacume advance solinoids)

Do you think something is just gummed up in my carb, or could it be the T-bar that was mentioned in another post.

Thanks.

I'm by no means a Nikki pro, but I'll tell you what I know about this. I doubt it's the T-bar. It might be that something in the secondary spring/diaphram/arm area is gummed up a little. This happened to me one time and my secondaries got stuck open. Look on the front passenger side of your carb - you'll see a vacuum pot (that's my word for it anyways lol) with 4 screws holding the cover on. Make sure the arm that actually opens the secondaries (underneath the vacuum pot if I remember right) is moving smoothly. When mine was stuck, it only took a touch of a finger to free it up. Spray carb cleaner liberally over the whole assembly. Also, I've also been told the spring inside the vacuum pot can get stuck/unseated. If you suspect this, unscrew the 4 screws holding the cover on and open it up carefully, so as not to mess up the gasket (I think there's one anyways). Make sure the spring inside is seated properly. Incidentally, this is the spring that people talk about cutting to achieve earlier opening of the secondaries.

Good luck!

I've seen a couple times where the secondaires were corroded stuck - need lots of penetrating oil on the linkage and the shaft area and plenty of elbow grease carefully working it all free.
