help me get my baby started

well my 7 has been sitting in my backyard for about 2 months now and its time to get her started. this is the story, one afternoon i went to start her up and she started up right away but she was backfiring like a mad woman then all of a sudden she cut off, so i thought she had just cut off so i tried starting her up and nothing but just cranks, so i though she was just flooded and i waited for the next morning and nothing she just cranked. now when i put gas down the carb she will start right up but when that gas is burnt away she dies, now please help me try and figure this darn thing out, i was thinking maybe a fuel pump but it could also be a relay if it has one or a fuse or a clogged fuel filter. if any of you fine gentle can give me a heads up on what too look for i will really appreciate it. btw, i just picked up some enkei's 15's for 120 buckaroo's as you can see i have some strong incentive to get her back on the road. thanks for reading my long as post

ok so if you give it gas while its off , then start it the engine will run and cut out?

what if you keep giving it gas while its running?

if it makes problems worse, and or if while cranking aplying the gas also makes problems worse then its most likely the fuel cut relay,

very simple fix, just have to cut one wire, dont even have to un-screw or take anything off.

takes about 1 minute

take the fuel line off of the carb and point it into a bucket
then get someone to turn it over for a sec

if no gas try it again this time take the fuel filter off and check the line there

or just turn the key "to on not run" and listen for the pump

if you cant hear it then its not working or failing

yep, cut it on all my first gens, and I have owned quite a few,

unless is a 13b, then i wouldnt since its computer controlled,

its a pretty common thing for them to just go bad,
well the relay doesnt actuall go bad, it just gets a bad signal saying to turn on, which inturn throws the switch inside the relay and takes power away from the pump by creating an open circuit.

all your doing is eliminating the bad signal as if it never happened and the circuit is again closed and operable.

no harm will come of this, I assure you,

the longest I drove with this perfomed was with my 4th 1st gen and I had that thing for a couple years and even drove it down to kentucky and back.

I still own the brown one im talking about in the thread I just linked you.

I can get you a photo of the wire and location tommorrow when its day light

Its a standard relay so there 4 or 5 wires, cant remeber off the top of my head,

I promise tommorrow I will get you some pics and the wire color, but only if you promise to respond with your results.

and if its not the problem we will figure it out, I gaurantee it.

I can get 1st gens running like no man can

when it comes to second gens though, I not quite as gifted.

If you cut the relay and its not the problem it will make no diference, if there isnt a signal present it will already be working the same as if you cut the wire.

also if it is the problem you will hear the relay click right when you cut the wire.

maybe this will get archived if it turns out good.

sort of had the same problem. if it is flooded, pull the plugs, and pull the fuse that turns the pump on, and crank the engine over till it blows out all the extra gas. Clean up the plugs, and put them back in. Make sure the fuel delivery system is working right, and start it back up. Hope this helps, but it solved my flood problem.

yeah it has gas, i dumped about 5gal inthere the following day thinking it didnt have any and still no crank. i wouldnt say its flooding becouse i could pour gas into the carb all day long and when that gas burns off it just stops running, so i know im not getting any fuel to the engine

here are the pics,

this one shows the aproximate location of the cut relay

this is an under shot of the where the relay is located

here is a shot with my finger on the actual relay, as you can see I cut two of the wrong wires by accident.
The wire is the black with yellow stripe.

listen closely for a click sound when you cut the relay

If your pump is working ok, then it's just that the gas has evaporated out of the fuel lines. pull start it.

yaeh You would be amazed at how many time I tell people I know what the problem is and they dont take my advise and do things the hard way.

As simple as cutting one wire. who would have thought it?

as far as I know I found that trick out and have been trying to get it out there for quite some time now.

Check your water pump for overheating probs, if you have already checked the obvious stuff.

thats usally what it is, when its not just the water level or that it needs to be flushed and filled.

glad to hear its runnin
