I have 4K to put into my FD, need suggestions

Hi...I own a 94 100% stock FD and I just sold my bike...I have $4000 to spend. What do you guys think would be a good invesment except a engine rebuild.

Thank you!

Downpipe immediately. Get that precat out of there.

AST. Replace the OEM plastic with metal.

Is it the stock radiator, that should be in bad shape by now. Upgrade to a Fluidyne or something.

What condition is your rubber? Still running 225-50-16? Get some 245-45-16s. Make damn sure they are the best rain tires you can get.

Intake, Exhaust and Apex PFC next.
Save anything else for disasters.

Downpipe, AST, Catback, Boost and water temp gauges.

And of course, the Cheap Bastard Intake. Info here:

https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...hreadid=121491

Since you live in LA, you will need to pass smog. This intake will pass.

Save the rest for future mods or repairs. This will be a good start.

Reliability mods are a must with the 3rd gen, but you might want to save as much of that $4K as possible for a rebuild. At 100K miles it might be just around the corner.

Well then go ahead with all the reliability mods listed above. You should also do the fan mod or relplace the thermoswitch with a miata one (Mazda part number N350-18-840) to turn your fans on at a lower temp. I wouldn't do the rebuild until your current motor dies - you might get lucky and get another 50K out of it.

I assume you did the fuel filter and ran some fuel injection cleaner, changed plugs, replaced wires, changed coolant, changed tranny/diff oils and bled the brakes. So that leaves:

Replace toe-links
Replace rear suspension pillow ball bushings if the rear suspension is clunking
Alignment
Fix the shifter bushing if its sloppy
Downpipe
K&N replacement air filter
Miata thermoswitch (turns fans on earlier)
Replace AST before it breaks
Consider an upgraded radiator

maybe some new speakers too

True...having another car for a daily is definitely a plus. Especially when you start working on the 7 for mods or tuning or whatever. Great to see you already have money for a rebuild...(sad that we automatically all seem to account for that).

Looks like a great list so far.

Tein Flex coilovers, made my car drive 100% better. You should also be able to get a DP, MP, Catback, ECU. I dont know how LA would like a straight exhaust but that will give you a hell of a power gain.

Getting a beater would also be a really good idea.

DP & MP = 300$
Catback = 4-500$
Power FC = 1000$
Flex Coilovers = 1300$
Boost gauge = 50$
Watertemp gauge = 50$
AST = 150$
Fan switch mod = Free

That still leaves you with 650$ for a beater.

go with radiator, AST, intake, dp, mp, exhaust, boost & water temp gauge and boost controller (you are going to need it when you open the exhaust) and a bushing set. that should be about $4k

what about some sort of computer system to handle that dp/mp/cb/intake combo, go with the relibality mods listed above, then move on from there. Don't just jump into modifications take your time and do it safely.

I say do all of the tune up options you can, replace plugs, sparkplug wires, all fluids (tranny and diff too), fuel filter, vacuum hoses, any couplers that may be cracked etc.. Then move on to a DP, new AST, Radiator/hoses, gauges, and a fan switch. Then move on to your bigger mods, Boost controller, CB, Intake, Computer system, then go with a MP, pullys to eliminate the air pump, and blockoff plates to remove all emmisions stuff. That will leave you with the option of going with more boost, upgraded twins, non-sequential etc..
Not exactly $4000 but the First stage of modifications should fall within that range, I just kinda gave a guideline that I am following
