Just for ***** and giggles... what would be involved with importing the current RX from Japan. I know of some people that have imported Euro cars to the country, and most estimates make it $10-20k added to the price of the car and a long wait.

Is it the same for an FD from Japan? TIA

why would you wanna spend around 10-20k just to import a rx7 over??? you could buy one here and build the **** out of it and it will cost you half of what you spend to importing it over only. now that's not including modding it. the only time i would import a rx7 is if only RE Amemyia fully builds one for me.

I don't know if Crackers will pop in here, but I know he ran into a problem about a certain restriction or qualification/approval the car needed to be imported.

I don't know if he researched it even more, but basically, if it could be done cost effectively, people would be doing it. Have you seen the markup on the Skylines that get imported?

So Hypothetically, If someone spent lots and lots of money and trashed 3 or 4 1999 RX-7's for testing, any RX-7 after that would just be base cost plus import tax and lic?

As a side note, what would be the cost to import one just for "track" use. Like with the Lotus Exige.

 

I wondered, why I got a email about importing. Due to problems occuring in my family I haven't had much time to continue with my work on importing fds. Mahjik as far as the problem with the OBII cert It only affects 1996+ newer fds.

For the person who said that you need to crash test 4 fds to get them to pass is wrong. I would only need to crash 1 two at most if I would even need to witch I doubt I would. Reason you see that motorex crashed 4 was because it imported 3 diffrent body style skylines as the fd is only the fd only needs to be done once. Then again remember the fd was imported into the states.

I can import an 92-95 j-spec fd with out really any hasles. anything newer and thats when I get into nightmares. I have a few people who live in japan who have contacted me wanting to import some 92-95 j-spec fds and Once I get some time to actuly do it I will get back in touch with them and Get some over here and legalise it.

 

Umm no there is alot more to it then that.
you need to add the OBDII computer system. Run it on a 11mile dyno run from cold to start just to pass the emission testing on the OBDII system and what not. Then you have to alter the Spedo and other systems

But the OBDII is the problem I am occuring right now preventing me from importing 99s...........


Ohh and your question on importing some fds for track. You can do that for the freight and customs costs and then the car has to be destroyed siezed by the gov to be destroyed or exported Unless you get another year clearence to race it again.

My question is, if you're gonna build a race car just find one with a blown engine or something wrong with it and work from that.

 

So, no one here mentions the fact that if you import a J-spec, it will be right-hand drive? THAT would take some getting used to.

 

RHD isn't that hard to get used to.....it is hard to go to the drive thru though.

I drove a R32 and R33 and it's not the shifting but turning and locating your place in the lane.

I know it wouldn't cost that much, but all that hard work and effort cost something. I don't think Moterex is selling their Skylines for a profit margin of $100. I'm guessing they're making more than $10000 per car.

true that. My friend went to the tokyo auto salon last year. While he was there he stopped by a used car dealership. 25,000 dollars for a R33, some producing over 400 horses.

now explain how motorex sells these things for 60,000?

 

Because they can. They are the only way to have a skyline street legal in the US. THEY spent the money for cars to be crash tested and the money for all the carb crap. They blew over 800k to get the skylines here. In my opinion they were smart as hell.

Anyone can buy a skyline and bring it here chearp but being able to legally register it is another story.

There are some minor modifications that need to be done to the car for US driving but all that crap will cost about 15k from motorex to registration included i think.
