[crazy] cruise control problems

S5 NA.

ok, ever since i got my car the cruise control has "worked". i say this because this is how it worked:

- the "main" switch would have to be pushed in
- "resume" did nothing
- "set" did not set anything, the car just kept accelerating if it were pressed!
- if light switch was in the OFF position, then hitting "coast" the car would just keep accelerating.
- if the light switch is in the other two positions, the "coast" switch acted as BOTH my "set" and "increase speed" switch somehow!
so what would happen is when i first press it down after pushing the "main" button, it would hold at the current speed. if i pressed it after this, it would increase speed slightly and hold.
- brake and clutch cancel worked fine

so now finally it has stopped "working", and i plain can't get it to hold a speed or do anything at all.
i looked in the FSM, and tried the first 2 error code diagnostics they had, but i can't even get it to do that! this **** is totally on crack:

- light switch in any position: pushing "coast" down when "main" is OFF, both CRUISE and MAIN lights come on, but very dimly.
- with the light switch to OFF: pushing the main button, the CRUISE light comes on
- with the light switch to illum or headlight: pushing the "main" button, no light on the CC switch comes on. however when "coast" is held down, the "MAIN" light turns on

i think this is some sort of wiring or ground problem, anyone have any ideas?

thanks

sounds like it is an aftermarket system incorrectly wired or it is the wrong cruise control brain for the switch.

aftermarket? the CC computer appears to be there and i don't see any sign of aftermarket components. i'll take a closer look, i'll have to anyways to try to get to the bottom of this...

what about the CC switch? could that be the problem?

When you press the MAIN button and release it, does it then stay in a intermediate position? Then you press it again and the button now fully releases to the full out position?

Of the two switches in the jpg attached, does yours look more like the one to the left or the right? The difference is how the part with the display (1/2 by 1/2 *window*) is SLANTED on one and more or less squared up on the other. I'm talking about the part where the *red line* is pointing to.

Not applicable for a S5 switch... S5 cruise control switches have a momentary switch for the Main switch. They do not latch in and out like the S4 ones. This is what requires a S5 cruise control brain, and why a S4 cruise control brain would make it so you had to hold the S5 main button in for the cruise to work.

Looks like the left one (S5) was in a fire

Mine is the one on the right, and nothing happens when engaged....it looks functional, and is attached to the engine.....at least from my limited knowledge.....could it be electronic issues?

Have you checked to see if the cruise control brain is plugged in??? On the 88 vert the cruise control brain is next to the ECU under the passengers foot/floor panel

The cruise switch on the left is a series five. It won't latch in a intermediate position. I did use this switch on a series four. I had to rearrange the wires on the plug to the switch and as you can see, I used a piece of tie wrap to make the button stay in place. I used this for about three years or more til last month I installed a series four switch and rearranged the wires of the plug that goes to the switch.

That's the reason I asked which switch you have. Since you have a series five and SEEM to have a series four switch.......it ain't a gonna work. I think I could make it work if I had the series five wiring diagram and took a ohm meter to that switch and matched wires in the plug to the right pins on the switch. That's IF the rest of the system like the CCU and actuator are for a series five.

I'd try to pick up a series five switch. The one in the picute came out of a burned out wreck and at the time I got it didn't know squat about series five vs series four cruise control. IF I remember right, I got the CCU out of the burned wreck and OOOPs, it didn't match the plug in the series four car. Things are vague about what happened next. I eventually got a series four CCU and found it still did not work. Then I looked at the schematics for a series four and realized the switch wasn't working as it should, BUT if I move the wires in the plug to match the function of the switch it would work EXCEPT the button HAD to be constantly depressed for normal cruise control. I THOUGHT at the time the button function was broken but now realize that was the way it was made and was for a series five.

Tell you what. Send me a PM and I might let you have that switch to the left for ???? $$$. It is BURNT as you can see. It works. Nothing has been tampered inside it. I've removed the tie wrap wire. I might trade it for the switch you have IF the one you have latches midway when depressed then when deptessed againg fully extends again.

About PM'S. I NEVER answer (nor read) pm's unless I'm buying something or selling somethig. I do mean NEVER. I think I've a couple of hundered unread pm's.

i think it might be the switch!
actually i am pretty sure i have the WRONG switch:

yes, the "main" button has an intermediate position.
my CPU and CC computer are all S5.

wow, i've been driving thousands of kilometres with the wrong switch "working" lol.

HAILERS thanks for sending me back a PM.
if it really is the switch, i think i can get a good condition one, but if not sometime soon i will take you up on your offer.

if you still need an S4 switch, i can sell you mine for cheap.

- Aaron

edit: is there a difference between the turbo and non-turbo CC switch?

ok, so i swapped in a S5 CC switch and i still can't get my cruise to work...
i tried checking error codes through the switch, but either i don't have any or i can't get it to work.

also, i can't get the "Main" light to come on, although the "Cruise" light does turn on.

is the CC computer to blame here?

Series five CCU has a eighteen pin plug. The series four has a thirteen pin plug.

Series five CCU is more or less square in shape compared to the series four that is longer than wide and is usually gold/anodize in color.

In other words the harness plug won't fit if you have the wrong unit.
