Question 86-92 RX-7 (with a 13B rev engine) or a 240SX (with a SR20DET engine)?

i can't decide between the two cars, i love them both but i heard that RX-7's engines break down all the time. is that true? any information on RX-7's would be nice. anyone who has put or has a 13B-REV engine tell me what it's like and if it's worth shipping from japan.

From the sounds of it you need the 240sx with the SR20DET. I don't know if the 13B-REW is for you.

Keep in mind that dropping a 13B-REW into an FC is harder than dropping an SR20DET into a 240SX, i believe.

Just so long as it's not a ******* Honda...Hah. j/k.

putting a 13B-RE in an fc is done mroe easily. and has more power potential, and is cheaper. a 240SX with an SR is a force to be reckoned with in every aspect, speed, styling, and handling. but an FC with a 13B-RE would blow it out of the water.

just build up a nice 13bt... there is no reason to swap engines. you can get 400RWHP outa a 13bt without much truble.

It comes in the 87-91 TII. Check the For sale section, quite a few are for sale or being parted off.

240sx is going to take alot more work to make it compete with a TII. Besides the eingine, the 240s have no LSD<usually>, if you do happen to get one you should go out and buy a lotto ticket. Also the 240s brakes stink compared to the FCs.
So ontop of an $ for an engine swap youll have to fork up
$350-400 for an LSD <stock viscous> lots of people want them so they are also rare.
ANd a 300zx brake upgrade, I hear is upwards of $500.
This is what my friend says, he has a 180sx
I really wanted a 180 and convert it to the s14 frontend and swap the SR20 but the brakes and diff scared me away.
Get a 87-88 TII. They are cheaper and have 2way LSDs.
Then sell the engine and get whatever eingine you want.
HMMMM an SR20 in a RX-7 sounds fun.

Why do you want the 13b-REW so bad? Its a good engine but not worth the time and/or money involved in the swap. A streetported 13BT will make similar horsepower with alot less work.

With a large streetport done correctly and full intake and exhaust you could gain up to 50-60% increase. I believe thats between 300-320 hp on a turbo. i dont know alot about turbos so i could be quite off base.

no way you'll get 300-320 off the stock turbo. Most ive seen was a large street port w/ a FMIC dynoing at around 280 at the wheels boosting about .8 bar.

I said I wasnt well versed in turbo motors. I also said with full intake and exhaust, which could add those extra horses.

One of the reasons the 240sx is loved is for its weight distribution...almost perfect 50/50. I don't know how it is on the RX7, I'm new here. SR20 turbo and RX7 turbos are good to approximately the same PSI stock, and roughly the same horsepower (surprisingly). What do you want the car for? Street/strip/AutoX/? Correct me if I'm wrong, since I'm new here (Got sick of Hondas and now I'm making the same decision currently as RX7Wray, I think I'm gona go with an RX7 over 240). Some good info for SR20 motors can be found at http://www.pandablue.com/nissansilvi...ms/default.asp
Good luck with your decision!

It almost never ceases to amaze me that someone would come to an RX7 forum, and then ask us if he/she should buy the FC, or the whatever...

AS if anyone of US is going to recommend you buy a 240 SX (unless you are just too stupid to own an FC).

The reason why you shouldn't put the REW in the FC is because it's just too much of a pain in the ***. I've heard that putting a 20B in is more worth it if you're really gonna spend the money. If you get a built 13BT you'd be making about the same power as you would with the REW, so there's almost no point. What I'm really getting at here, is you can do whatever you want, but there are certain things that are only capable of wasting time. Swapping an REW into an FC seems to be one of them.

why didnt i get to make this kind of decision when i turned 16?...oh yeah i didnt have $10k dollars to blow on something i didn't seem to know anything about...

how about...start small and build up. like maybe buy a plain car and learn how to drive and work on it first. and use that button at the top that says search by clicking it and then typing in relavant info like "13b-rew conversion" to get a result like this: https://www.rx7club.com/forum/search...der=descending

By no means is the FD engine a drop in to FC . A 20B is much more easier. It requires extensive work to drop a FD engine. The amout of money you spend to drop an FD engine in with the custom fabrications, it's too much.
If you have extensive knowledge on both cars or mechanically inclined, I'd take a whack at it. The car will have serious downtime. It's not something you can just drop in and start the car. By your questions, I'm assuming you don't have an FC. The amount of money you spend you can buy an FD and have money to spare.

aside from powerplants and weight distribution...the FC has the styling department locked down. the 240 just doesnt look as sexy.
