You can buy or rent a container from a container or shipping company. I think a used container costs about $1500 to buy.
I think the shipping costs would run you...umm, about what it would cost to ship a container

If you want to buy an actual container that is sea worthy it will be a lot more than it is worth to just ship for a one way trip. You will need to contact a freight shipping company in the Okinawa area. There should be plenty of them near the base or port. There are a lot of different classifications for each kind of part etc and if you included household stuff then I can only imagine there are more classifications to search through. If you live in Oki then you should look into buying or renting a smaller (20 foot) container. You can store the car and other stuff in there until you are ready to ship. Then you can call the freighting company and tell them to drop off whatever size container you will be shipping to Texas. They will bring you the container and you will need to move all of your stuff into it. Engines, transmissions, and fuel tanks must be emptied of liquids. Your car most likely will shift and move within the container, thus possibly damaging things around it. This is not always the case but it happens. If it is a complete car and still completely assembled you will face some importing paperwork etc. I am not familiar with that part of the importing biz.
From Yokohama port a 40 ft container can be shipped to California for around $3,000. However having a location to fill the container or a way to take the container contents to the port can be difficult and also incurs costs.
Lastly when shipping cars or parts it is a good idea to have an extra $5,000 or so ready for when the container arrives at its destination. Sadly if for whatever reason you container is held in customs or thoroughly searched you will be hit with storage fees etc... and they tend to run about 500 a day! (Yeh unfortunately I have gone through this...) Which is what brings me to my last point. If you do ship a container dont trust someone who tells you they know how to do it or know someone else that can do it... Pay the extra money (10%-15% or so) and have a legitimate professional company do it.

No problem! I think a lot of people could use that info. The more people realize what all is involved in exporting and importing a container the better. People seem to think that there is huge $ to be made due to the low prices on used parts in Japan, but that really is not so true because the costs involved and time involved in actually gathering parts, renting a container, shipping a container, unloading a container in another country and storing the parts again is quite high!

thanks for the great info. I'm going to see if I can get a 20 footer. most of the parts I have are not for resale. but I have bought them over the years for my own cars. im hoping that shipping my household stuff in with it, it will look like more like a relocation instead of a parts run

I tried doing the same thing in 04 from Oki and it was confusing so I backed out just because of the storing fees.
I had a japanese girlfriend everything was so much easier because she would do all the talking but it was looking like this for me.
1 -Container from Oki gets shipped to mainland- container $? plus shipping $1200
2- From mainland depending on how many days its held at the port to shipping in california- $3000-5000
3- Once it was in the port in the US i had a certain amount of days till i retrieve the container of its goods and find a way to get it all. So that required me to get a uhaul and store the stuff until I was ready to go to my home state. atleast a miminum of $2000 to 4000
In the end it would of ended up costing a lot if I wanted to sell parts. Now if I was going to keep the car and parts for me then I would of saved a few grand from actually buying in the states. Again this was my case every case will be diffrent. and I am sure you can find a way better deal with Tom.
