trip to japan

Hey guys I am taking a couple month stay in japan, no real reason other than just to stay and learn the local language and culture just something I've always wanted to do. so heres my question? where should i stay? Tokyo, Okinawa, Yokohama.....
i plan on learning a bit of Japanese before i leave for the trip to help with getting around and whatnot. but what is the best option for a nonmilitary as far as housing and location? thanks guys

I'll be honest with you. It might be a bit of a challenge but...stay in the countryside if you can. You will enjoy it 10x better and the experience as well being completely away from westernized b.s. in cities like Tokyo. I mean if your going to take a trip like that to see another country, then do just that. If you wanted to see other westerners, shopping malls, etc...you could just go outside your door for that. I stayed in Mie-Ken, about 3 1/2 hours outside of osaka. The whole 4 weeks i was there, i only seen one white person/westerner (the guy didnt look very western so i was assuming european). Not to mention that next to nobody spoke english so i was forced to actually learn something instead of making the other speak english to me.

If you don't mind I answer this one... Detroiter is right. Country side is much better than cities. I live in Shizuoka City which is right between Tokyo and Nagoya. This is a great place that I like way better than Tokyo for instance. Life is slower and people really nice. If you wanna stay for a couple of month, I can even introduce you to some japanese schools which can also help you finding a small appartment. All depends on what you're exactly looking for. If you have any queastions about Shizuoka, let me know...
