Qestion for all you military guys!

I'm currently going to school to be an auto mechanic and I'm graduating soon. I'm really interested in living in Japan, but seeing as how I'm only studying auto mechanics, that is the only real job I could have over there. What are the odds of me getting a job? I could work for one of the military branches over there, but (and it's a big but apparently) I'm a type 1 diabetic. From what I read, that means I'm PDQ from all branches. That means there's no chance of working on cars on a base?

I have a little experience with the Japanese language. I have one year of Japanese that I took in high school and I'm studying on my own right now with the Pimsleur program. I figure if I'm off base, I'm going to have to know a ton of Japanese.

I wish I could help you out on that one. But you're correct, if you worked off base, you'd have to be fluent in Japanese

If you had any chance at all of working on a base overseas you'd have to be ase certified and speak japanese. And they probably wouldn't pay you much of anything or for your move. It's much easier for them to hire locals that know english to do to do the job you would want. Sorry man.

What he's saying is that it's much easier for bases overseas to hire local nationals, ie the japanese that already know how to speak english.

Why not work at a Japanese shop rather than a US military base? Granted knowing Japanese will exponentialy increase your chances of getting a job, but its still feasible to save up some money, then come here spend a month or so going around from shop to shop and telling them what you can do (documentation of graduation and things like that are helpful). I assure you the standard of living won't be that great. The other foreigners I mainly see around are their filipinos (for some reason many pinoys work at hostess bars) and Brazilians (which work blue collar jobs, mechanics, etc.)
They can speak "limited" Japanese so to say, I suppose its similar to illegal immigrants working in the U.S. So if you just know some basics, I'm sure you could find something. Mind you, the standard of living won't be so great though :/
