does anyone do this in japan? not trying to offend anyone but i have a decently built ls1 and am wondering if its worth it to bring with and drop in a 7. please dont give me alot of crap i just want to know. thanks

 

I cant imagine people do this in japan because ls1 motor or any american motor is considered exotic ie not cheap my frient in the army tried to finish his mustang build where in the states it was cheap but in japan parts had to be special ordered and expensive. It would be nice to see one in japan it would probaly be a crazy build.

 

If you are already in Japan, what you need to do is go down to the LTO office and ask them about swapping an american V-8 into a Japanese car that will be registered in Japan.

No it is not worth it because the mod by itself will be a royal pain to make legal if you do not get a high dollar shop with connections to do all of the work. TAXES (multiple types) will be a royal pain and the bi-annual inspections will be a pain unless you pay a shop EXTRA to slide your car past the inspection.

cause im lazy and dont want to change the location later.and i arrive on the 11th. so in other words its not worth it. thanks; i will just let it sit in my parents garage or sell it. i just thought it would be cool to do.

 

What is with people coming in to the east section and asking about v8's in Japan.
If it was cool or worthwhile it would have been done. But it is not cool (in Japan)and therefore has not been done.

Can we put a new line in the Far east section rules saying thou shalt not waste other members with stupid questions that you can answer on your own or by making one phone call.

 

Heaven forbid someone tries to learn about the culture before they move there. And how about you quit wasting our time with your stupid post that no one cares to read. And maybe its not popular in japan because of the cost of the swap.

 

I say go for it dude. Swap in an Ls1 and show those rotary boyzzz how slow their cars actually are XD

 

i do really want to do it but on the other hand i dont know about the gas there cause most ls1's are finicky about gas once modded, that and i dont know how to tune with hp tuners so i would have to learn as i go. i am still considering bringing it with to do the swap. i will have to do some more research before i decide. thanks for the replies most are very helpfull.

 

I say bring it..buy a 7 over there and do the swap on base. if you can't find a way to make the car legal in japan, then just register and drive it on base until you come home and you will have a kickass car upon return. in the mean time, you can pickup a beater to get you around when you have to go off base real far....i think you'll find that you won't need a car all that much.

The cost of it being done here has been discussed here before and is absolutely a waste of money which is why I ommitted it from my post that you wasted your time reading and didnt care about so much that you thought you should reply.

i was refering to the car culture, whats popular with cars over there that sort of thing. As of the cost i see its expensive but i dont know how much of a waste it would be. v8rx7s are pretty sweet especially lsx fd's. I dont see much point of a dreamers sub section thats all this site is. Kids who have na second gens that dream of turboed fd's, you want a real site head on over to v8rx7forum.com. rotarymotor - did you read my first reply? I pretty much explained why people do not waste time and money on V8 setups over here.

drivinggodspeed - All privately owned vehicles have to be registered through the GOJ (Government of Japan) in order to be operated ON or OFFBASE.

Cuban - you could always bring the motor and sell it to one of the HotRod crews but trying to get an NON-Japanese V8 FD/FC legalized for street operation is going to cost you a LOT of loot.

Dont you think there are ways to get around smog even in japan. California has the strictest smog laws in the country, yet there are plenty of people driving around in their non-smog legal cars


I think you should do it. Buy the engine and trans here, bring it over along with a basic swap kit and buy the rest of the parts there. Most of the swap consist of parts from other cars. I'm pretty sure there is someone in japan that can shorten a driveshaft and put a mazda flange on the end of it. thats about as much "custom" work as their is.

I'm sure there are, but it costs money, which adds on to the cost of an already expensive swap.

Plus, Japan's inspections and fees could be much much much more than we're used to paying.

To re-iterate: Not cost effective to do a non-Japanese motor swap into a Japanese vehicle that will be driven on the streets of Japan (US military bases included).

might want to lay out exactly how much everything associated with the swap costs (all your fees, etc.)
