ECU Error Code 51

Hi, I hope one of my Jap Bro's can help me out

I'm an Aussie with a Jap Import 1997 Rx7. My stock ECU is throwing an Error Code 51 intermittently. Does anyone have a Service Manual for the 1997 Japanese Rx7 out there, and can anyone please tell me what Error Code 51 is for a 1997 Japanese Rx7?

The reason I ask is, I have a copy of the Service Manual for 1994 Rx7's which I downloaded off the Internet (It could be for USA spec cars).
When I look up error code 51 in this manual, it is documented as the error code is for Fuel Pump Relay (Speed).
Now I have checked my fuel pump relay, and it seems to be switching just fine, so I dont believe this is the cause of error code 51 in my Japanese Car (I put a multi-meter on the fuel pump connector at the rear of the car, and watched it correctly switch between 8V at low RPM, to 13V at high RPM).

I have been told by several people that the error codes thrown by USA/Australian Spec Rx7 may not be the same of Japanese Spec Rx7.... I also know there has been several revisions of the ECU, which may also result in different error codes for different models of Rx7.

Please help!

hi sco, sorry don't have an english service manual for the later 7's, don't think ANYONE does..., and i don't have access to a japanese manual either. they seem all electronic now and no one who works for a dealer appears to have copied a disc and released it to the general public

i can only suggest you continue checking out your fuel pump relay

if the fuel filter starts to block the relay will draw more current, that may be causing your fault code. if you can get hold of a multimeter that can handle 10amps and bursts of 20amps i would remove the relay and use the multimeter to bridge the power cct and run the pump at idle to get a current reading

then you'll need to compare that reading with another car. a higher than normal reading could tell you your filter is on the way out

but i'd say your best bet would be to try and swap relays with someone for awhile. intermittent electrical faults are the worst to find

perhaps you should look for a part number on your fuel pump relay and then check the 94 parts book to see if it's the same.......would make finding someone to swap with easier
