Just ordered a little RC drifter.....
I got one of those little Tyco Drift Kings cars off of Ebay. It's the RX 7 of course! It's not a hobby level RC, but I got it real cheap and I figure it should be fun. It's a lot easier and cheaper to drift a 1/10th scale car than it is to drift a real one! Anyway, when I get it in the mail I'll let you know if the fun level is worth getting one! If anyone else has one let me know what you think of it!
Yea, it's a little electric car. It's not modable, but it should be good enough for me to see weither or not I want to get something more expencive.
I've been looking today some and although you don't need top of the line stuff to drift with, it can still get expencive real quick. The kit (chassis, motor, suspension, tires, electronic speed controller) I was looking at was enrty level with everything you need except for the reciever, some batteries, and a batt. charger and it was $95+. Then you've got another $40-$60 worth of reciever kit,(the reciever plus the servos to run it), $40-60 on a couple of good batt., and I'm not sure (didn't get this far), but probably another $40-60 on a charger, and don't forget about the body for another $40-50. In the middle ground your lookin' at $300 to get going on a hobby level rc drifter.
I attached some pics of the chassis, reciever, and a couple of bodies......

I've been entertaining the idea of building a small one since I saw an electric motor at the Radio Shack in the basement of my building for $5 that produces 7800rpm.
Already thought of the motor, driveshaft, and chassis.
Need to think of materials/systems for the steering (they have a few different motors), tranny (may just use some kind of slippage system connecting to the driveshaft), suspension, differential, electrical power, shell, and control. I think it would be a neat little project.
RWD FTW. LOL at those SINGLE lug wheels :p

The Tamiya TT-01 chassis looks real good. With some minor mods you can make it a TT-01R, put whatever body on it you want, choose from several different radios (Futaba 2 channel seems to be popular and cheap) and be good to go. You could drop about $400 and have a real nice set up it looks like.
Yokomo makes some good stuff as too from what I can see. The DP-DR1 looks pretty tight. You can get the kit that comes with the radio and all you have to buy is the wheels, a body, and some batteries and a charger. For me personally, I would rather pick my own body and wheels anyway (makes it a little more unique IMO).
The only other thing would be some ABS tubing (the black sewer pipe stuff) for the tires and you would basicly have a competition level RC drifter.
I'm going to see how it goes with this cheap Tyco car I got, but I have a feeling I'm going to end up enjoying it so much that I'll want to move up to the next level.
