free engine building help (UK)

hey guys,

I am temporarily in the UK working for the Renault F1 team until march, and I'm bored. I am an experienced engine builder, fabricator, and mechanic and would be happy to help anyone out who needs it for only the price of a pint or two just to have something to do.

I live in charlbury (near oxford) so it would have to be reasonably close to there. I only brought a bag of clothes and a laptop with me, so you would have to have the tools.

if anyone needs a hand, shoot me a pm.

Pat

Damn I wish I was still living in the UK (I used to be an engine controls engineer @ Ford Essex) or you were living in Vancouver, BC ^_^

Do you have pictures of your rotary 20baby?

How are you liking it out there (UK and Renault F1)?

Soo many questions to ask, how's Renault F1 doing generally :o) Sorry I had to ask...curiosity...

there are a bunch of pics and stuff on my car floating around this forum. look for the '500+ horsepower club' thread in the fc section.

I dont mind it here and I'm having fun just with the experience, but I'm a little disappointed that seems like for everything that I feel like they do better here than the US, there is one that is worse as well. Guess nowhere is perfect. It would be nicer in the summer as well, I think I came at the wrong time of year.

I like the general practicality here. I like the speed cameras and roundabouts. I like that they are more efficient than we are. I like the pubs. I like the history. I dislike the slight rudeness of everyone, the narrow beer selection, the lack of geographical variety, and the lack of customer service/retarded opening hours. All in all it adds up to make me kind of ambivalent about the country, and considering that my friends and family, my car, my tools, my dog, and my fiancee are all back in the US, I wish I could have a job like this but live at home.

I am liking Renault F1 quite a bit. Its nice that the high tech / high pressure environment cuts through a lot of the bullshit you have to deal with in most engineering environments, and for sure the UK (and pretty much everywhere) has got a much better labor environment than the US. Engineers are actually allowed to do real work here, instead of getting yelled at if we touch a wrench. Here I get 23 days a year vacation, plus holidays and sick days. At home I would get half the holidays, a quarter of the sick days, and maybe 10 days vacation. I'm not some clock watcher that wants every day off, but it just shows that they have a little more respect for their workers here, and plus, I like to travel and go to the track, and with only 10 days off a year, I would have a hard time making it all happen.

I work in R&D, so I can't really talk about what I do, but I am learning and having a great time.

Renault F1 is doing fine, they have had a bit of a shakeup with the team being bought and all, but I'm still hoping to see them have a decent season. I got to hear them fire up the first 2010 car the other day, and it was pretty awesome!

PS, Since no one from the US will understand my speed camera comment unless I explain it:

You can only get a speeding ticket here if they have photographic evidence. They generally get that two ways: automatic speed cameras and mobile units which consist of a big van with some cops in it with a camera. If they catch you they mail you the ticket.

Whats nice about this is that you would have to be a moron to get a ticket. You can see the vans and cameras from 1/4 mile away or more, they are legally required to be marked, and the mobile units are only in certain areas. In other words, if you are familiar with the roads, you know where they all are, and you can go as fast as you want in between. Theres none of this crap we have at home where the cop is hiding in a bush with a laser gun, and there is none of this crap where they chase people at high speed putting everyone around them in danger.

It is true that Europe in general takes care a lot more about the employees (I had 7 weeks of holidays in France, 5 in the UK and 3 in Canada, that's harsh...) but cost of life is higher too. It's hard to get the best of both worlds. I don't know if you have traveled much but I would if I were you, I now regret not having visit a lot more when I was there, with companies like RyanAir it's pretty cheap to spend a WE outside the UK (plus you're not far from Heathrow or Luton). If you want to see more geographical variety you should go to Scotland or France for instance, if you can make it to Italy or even Spain then I don't think you'll be disappointed either.

How long are you there for?
