What ECU modifications are possible?

What modifications would you guys recomend for a non ported n/a 13b in a FC that had to follow the following rules.

The engine management computer or
ECU may be altered provided that all
modifications are done within the original
housing.

Other rules (not word for word) are that the AFM, factory sensors (temp, etc.), fuel injectors and factory wiring harness must be retained and used.

This applies to a FC RX-7 built for SCCA ITS club racing. Pretty much the exhaust is open for modification and the intake is open for modification BEFORE the AFM beyond that the intake track remains stock. And all emessions equipment can be removed.

I realize that on an unlimted budget a Haltech could be modified to fit into a stock ECU housing and altered to accept the readings from stock sensors using the factory wiring harness. I could only imagine that it could easily cost well over $5,000 and not really worth the effort or extra ~20 that might be gained over just a re-programmed ECU.

I know that there are a few companies that offer re-programming of the ECU but those are still geared towards street cars and cannot be "tuned" for different tracks.

From what I have read the Apexi S-AFC is sort of overkill for a track only car. Really the only tuning I think would be benefitial to a road race car would be the fuel alteration at specific RPM points for WOT and all the tuning at idle and driveability is not necessary.

What I would like to see is something simular to the S-AFC that is installed completely internal to the factory ECU box and could be tuned by removing the cover from the ECU.

What I had in mind:
An add on board for the the stock ECU (accessable with the ECU box cover removed) that has 10 adjustment pots (adjusted with a screwdriver?) each of them controlling the AFM signal at 4,000; 4,500; 5,000 ..... 8,000; 8,500 rpm.

I am not an electronics nerd but I know for this to work it would take an add on board that took 2 signals (the unmodified AFM voltage and a RPM signal) as well as its own power and ground. There would have to be a chip programmed to decide which of (or combination of) the adjustment pots is to be used based on the PRM signal. It would route the AFM voltage throught he appropriate adjustment pot then back to the stock ECU to do its thing.

Is something like that possible or is it as outrageous as modifying a Haltech?

Ideas, Suggestions?
