Need advice on ECUs
Need advice on ECUs
So I have a 3rd gen RX7.
Currently the engine is being rebuilt and has a PowerFC ECU.
- street ported
- 99 spec turbos
- wideband O2 sensor
- straight exhaust
- walbro fuel pump
- 1300cc secondary injectors
- smic
I'm considering a new ecu because I'll need to travel out of state to have this tuned as is. So access to a tuner in the future would be an issue.
My builder who is local recommends swapping out to adaptronic that he will be able remote tuned, but I'm well over budget as it is.
I've also heard some appealing things about the Haltech, but the issue there is probably access to a tuner and price.
Basically, I'm asking for what I'm working with, is the PowerFC sufficient or would the extra cost of the adaptronic or haltech warrant the expense?

I went Haltech and to get it tuned around this area was like waiting for paint to dry!
It really comes down to a couple things which on your end is budget and time.
On the "other end" it comes down to access to a tuner that can do it properly and how far you have to go to get it tuned,or how long it will take to tune it.
Now,I read some stuff on the "remote tuning" and IF I would have had that capability with the Haltech I would have taken that route.
I just got sick of everything and eventually parted a real NICE car..too much to do to get it to run correctly.(and I am not a spring chicken any more!)

The PFC is sufficient for what you're using it for, and like Styx said, it's much easier to find someone who can properly tune it for you.
The Haltech is a better, more powerful ECU though, and Steve Kan, who is one of the top FD tuners in the US, can work with one. It'll be a bit more expensive, but he's definitely capable and willing to work on an RX-7 with a Haltech.
I don't know of anyone with a street driven FD whos PFC is holding them back. Unless you're planning on going huge with your FD, the PFC is fine...Way better than the stock ECU or some kind of piggyback like Pettit.
