Knight Sports ECU
I bought a Knight Sports ECU the other day and was wondering if any of you guys know anything about them as far as reliability or the such goes.
Thanks

never had one even though I've had 3 differing ecu's in my car (PFS PMC, M2 stage 3 ecu, and now PFC). As far as info, their name is a reputable rx-7 tuner so I would think it would be okay. Was it tuned for an american car or from someone who had it come from Japan? Just curious since the timing would be advanced more than you would want for an american fd if it came from a japanese car.

Im not sure but i think it came from a JDM vehicle. I asked the guy if it would work and he said it would as long as i had the same mods. If this is a problem can the settings be changed for the timing?

I would have to be rechipped or have some sort of ignition controller like the APexi ITC. Apparently the gas over there is rated as a higher octane, thus allowing tuners to advance the timing more. With the lower octane here with 93 being the best available, the timing would need to be retarded a bit. With that said, Dave at KD Rotary said that the gas over there in Japan is like our 93 octane, just different method of measuring it give it a higher number than our way of measuring octane. My friend with a TII bought a Redom jap tuned ecu and (knocking on wood) has had any problems with it for about a year right now. It was also tuned for the gas in Japan.

Right, you could run it but until you are sure you don't hear any pings at WOT, I wouldn't push it too hard. Does anyone in the Atlanta area have ITC we could use to see what the timing maps are like on this ecu? I don't if the ITC is plug n play or if you have to splice wires, but is there any other way to figure out the timing? Maybe a PFS PMC could show the timing of it with the PFS set to 0 adjustments. Efini racing has one and it only takes about 10 to hook it up and see. David, you available?

I ran a knights sports computer in my car for a year and a half over here in Japan with a 60-1 single and I was running gas from on base that is only 89 octane and producing around 400hp with no problems other than I needed to take out a little fuel on the top end with an apexi SAFC....

Dragon, so your sayin you had a US spec car with JDM spec ECU and ran US gas with no problems. Or i guess the car spec wouldnt really matter seein its the ECU and Gas combo thats the concern. Well if this worked for you dont see why it wouldnt for me. I am also useing a S-AFC as well but havent installed it yet this will help with this as well right.
Thanks for the Support

Yep, you can use the S-AFC to help tune the fuel curves. What kind of boost are you going ot be running? 12 psi? The knight sport, more than likely, are like the rest of the chipped ecus, M2, pettit, superchips, etc. in that you might need a boost controller over 12 psi. The unlimited chips everyone talks about is just for the fuel and timing curves, and most then use a manual boost controller (dawes device $30 or an electronic one $$$) to set their boost. Good to hear about the ecu running fine on lower octane gas.

Yeah looks like its gonna work for me. i just have to make sure it gets tuned right with the afc. I havent put either in yet. I need to go somewhere to get them tuned together. Where would the best place be? I think the boost is set at 1 bar but i could be wrong.
Thanks

Bigger and better things
Jeremy:
If you want to im free today so If you want to install your apexi unit we could probably get it done..
i have the wiring diagrams for the car infront of me. and I like about 2 miles from Syms.. If your interested shoot me a call @ 404ewhizto . And maybe you could dyno tonight and get some bugs and kinks worked out... Especially if Tim can get us extra runs
Take care

my knight sports ECU's was set at 1Bar, 14.7psi... I would drop the catilizer for a strait pipe and intall a good front mount intercooler before summer comes around though just for good measure and to drop some back pressure off the exaust side...

aren't the stock injectors at 100% duty cycle at 1 bar? i think that you'll melt them if you run that much boost. also, i've heard that the stock IC is only good up to around 13.5PSI.

Hello PureMdMa.
I am Japanese, so I know about knightsports ECU well.
If you get JDM ECU, I recommend to re-program by knightsports.
I remember they can re-program about $300 and also have to pay registration fee $100.
I guess the ECU that you bought is N3A7, right? If so, this is exactly JDM ECU.
They are one of famous Rotary specialist in Japan and have a lot of knowledge.
They also have map of USA version.
If you re-program it, you can change boost-limit, rev-limit, change degree to start fan, change amount of oil put from metering pump.
Anyway they have a staff in LA area, so if you need more information, let me know.
Thanks.
