Just Received My PowerFC: First Impressions
Just Received My PowerFC: First Impressions
Well like I said I just received it tonight, and more or less just finished the install.
Disappointments:
I could just me missing something, but no way to securely mount. Other then the 2 Velcro pieces that came with it and no real place to put them. I was expecting to attach to stock mounting bracket or a new one to be included.
Wire cutting/pin removal required. This to me seems just silly. I would think that this was programmed for the FD it should be ready to just plug and play.
PS2 style Commander Connection. This type of connection is easily damaged, plug in just a little bit wrong and you bend a pin. Or worse if leaving connected someone stepping on or somehow managing to hit/kick/rip out hidden wire = trouble brewing.
Seemingly unnecessarily large commander cable. Kind of hard to just tuck under molding and hide.
Limited navigation buttons on Commander. One button does 9 functions, just a matter of knowing when and where.
Limited instructions. Very vague operation instructions are included with the Commander, none with the actual computer.
Seemingly in metric for good. No mph reading, and boost in bar rather then PSI.
Satisfactions:
First off, the power improvement is instantly noticeable. Where no power was before in the higher rev line b/c of the stock ecu backing off boost, there seems to be GOBS of extra hp that doesn’t seem to stop.
Install took 15 min; most time was spent looking for my damn socket wrench. Although a bit leery about cutting wires, the included diagram made this a snap.
Rough idle and 3k hesitation is history. Purrs like a kitten with no hiccups sputters or other such annoying things.
Digital gauges of water and intake temp, RPM, load ratios, EKS and other goodies with the added bonus of graph plotting.
Seemingly endless tuning possibilities that I will never get to actually use to its fullest potential.
Generally easy interface for the most basic of operations.
One other thing that confuses me, from what I understand (could be wrong) but the PFC comes with 2 maps? Base stock and base mod, Info on how to change to the mod map and when to do so would have been a nice touch in the instructions.
All and all, this was a great investment. I bit more advanced then I think I will ever use. However, once the rest of the exhaust goes on and intercooler goes in, I’m sure Ill is happy that I have it.
Once again, these are just first impressions. Open box, plug it in, this is what I thought. Might be helpful to someone that’s looking for and opinion. ::shrug::

Nice write up!
The PFC now ships with the base mod map settings. You can check your maps against the maps on here:
http://rx7.homeip.net/pfc/
The PFC allows two different boost settings. Perhaps that's what you are thinking of.

Where did you get the PFC? Was it set up for your car (based on description of mods, presumably) or are these just the generic FD maps? I remember when these things first came out there were a couple shops, SR Motorsports and maybe XS Engineering, that were "official" resellers and were trained to custom program it...but I don't know how much was marketing and how much was reality.

I got my PFC from The Rx-7 store from Jason. So right now I’m using the maps that are included from the factory. Once the rest of the mods go in a fellow FD owner in town has a very well tuned map that he said I can use. Only mods on car now are Koyo radiator, M2 cold air intake (not currently cold air b/c wont fit with radiator) and down pipe. Once I get the radiator situated in the right spot, Ill be putting the box back on the m2, m2 med SMIC, mid-pipe, greddy EVO cat back, supra fuel pump, 1200cc injectors and an ignition booster of some sort, I haven’t ordered that or done any research into that yet. This matches the mods of his car, so I will be able to use a professionally tuned map. Can’t wait to feel the car after that.
I assume that I cut the right wires; my A/C works fine on all settings, so a bonus there. 3 is my fav setting.
On a side note, car even seems easier to drive now also. Boost is insanely responsive, boost spools up faster at low-mid rpm taking away what little delay there was before. Makes for everyday stop and go driving a bit more enjoyable.

What happened when you tried it? In my opinion, unless either you're trying to eek out every last bit of horsepower, or you're talking about bleeding edge maps, these differences are overblown. Everyone talked about getting the proper chip for their mods in the Pettit-style ECUs too, but the fact is they weren't tuned that specifically.
