The only real true stand-alone ecu is an Electromotive. However, the other brands including micro, wolf, haltech, etc, will run a motor as well, just not as accurately.

Do a search in the ecu part of the forum as this topic has been debated repeatedly. The best thing for most people is that they have a local rep./installer for whatever system they choose to go with. If you're cheap ecu is tuned really well, it will always perform better than an expensive one tuned poorly.

I love my microtech, but it's not any better than a haltech. One system isn't really any better than the others, but they all have pros and cons. Do some research.

Look in the ECU section of this fourm, all the info you want is in there.

This is just a poor statement, 1st What about MOTEC, 2nd microtech, haltechs, whatever are fine for what 99.9% of the people out there would ever need.
Microtechs are a great buy for the money, and run on some of the quickest cars out there.

I understand why you say this - it comes with its own coils/ignitors - but that isn't really part of the ecu. And what if I don't want to use their coils and ignitors. I've heard mixed reviews when it comes to their stuff. Especically when it comes to rotary engines.

Whoever sold you that load of crap was definately selling something, and it starts with an 'E' and end in 'motive'.

First of all, those are brands, not products. It's like asking if a Ford is better than a Chevy.

If you are asking about a full-function EMS, Microtech currently offers the LT8 and LT12 (X models include ignition coils), while Haltech offers the E6 and E11. I think you need to research each particular model to see which one you like for your money. Local support is a big factor, because tuning and troubleshooting via email is not very effective.

Doh!

I'm sorry, but rumors Electromotive going under and all the TEC3 users have tons of problems with their units, I'll stay with the "buggy" Haltech E11 anyday...

The answer is (for most people)...the stand-alone ECU is only as good as the person tuning it.&nbsp You can have a $100k+ Magneti Marelli F1 computer, but if the tuner has no clue, it's not going to run better than an SDS with a competent tuner adjusting it.

Electromotive SUCKS ***...

I hope they do go under. Their ecu's constantly have problems. I'd rather use a microtech!
