how can i identify my ecu

hey guys, some guy is trying to sell me a supposedly upgrade ecu, but he's not sure what vendor. it'll make me feel better knowing what vendor's ecu program i'm buying. is there anyway i can tell it's a m2 ecu, petit, peter farrell, etc etc. i've seen the unit and and there's no marking on the casing at all. the ecu came off a heavily modded car with large stock ic, intake, exhaust, dp, js knock sensor, msd.

any tips on what to look for to identify the ecu? thanks for your help.

Ask them to pop the cover and take a picture of the main CPU chip.
Most of them are marked or labeled.

thanks ted. we opened it up, it just has a board on each side with no markings at all. all the components are soldered on, not movable using your hand.

Can you take a pic?
Most FD modded ECU's run daughter boards - it's kinda obvious when you inspect the solder joints that it's been modded.

These things come up for sale all the time in the classifieds. I wouldn't worry about passing on a deal if you want one with a known history.
