Exclamation which EMS

Alright guys I'm totally new to this electronic engine control stuff so bear with me here please. I'm trying to build a computer into my car ( like a laptop). I already have the computer setup ready to go in and lcd touch screens to replace the guages and to go where the radio was. I have built the comp to control and monitor the audio system and now its time to start on the engine control system. I want to be able to control the ignition and fuel systems through the comp but I also want to be able to monitor the engine and its support systems through it as well (real-time logging/control). Since there is no software (that I can find) that will allow me to do this directly I am forced to use an EMS linked to the comp. This is where I'm having trouble, I'm not sure which EMS would be best for this in fact I don't know enough about them to even make an educated guess. Can some body help?

Thanks,Jon

Hey just found this: http://www.enginemanagement.com.au/index.php?cPath=23
Is this AEM as in the AEM everybody on this forum talks about? If it is I'm gonna feel like a real ***.

Unless you have a large monitor (12-14"), I don't think that commercial EMS software would be usable for tuning an EMS. If you are a computer guru, you should have no problem writing a simple datalogging program that converts the output of various sensors into a display without bothering with commercial software or EMS products.

You may want to consider the Microtech or Wolf EMS that has a hand controller rather than attempting to integrate the EMS software into a multi-function display.
You can see the Microtech hand controller (carbon fiber look) here:

And the Wolf hand controller here (it's the silver colored box, and the round buttons have red lighting that you can't see in this picture):

No, that's a vendor that sells EMS (EMS the brand name) products.

There are two AEM EMS manufacturers that make products for rotary-powered vehicles:

1) AEM USA, which makes the Plug & Play EMS (Only works with the FD RX-7, but you can special-order a universal unit).

2) AEM Australia, which makes the Wolf EMS

Well I'm not that computer literate yet but its becoming apparent that it would be very useful if I was. As far as the large moitor thing, the center console disp. will be mainly audio and the gauge display one only needs to show the basic stuff (water temp, oil press, etc) and they will be run as one monitor, though res. may be an issue. I only want the ability to tune through them in case something goes wrong and, there are various programs available that allow you to zoom in on a part of the screen and once you get used to using them you can work very effectively with it. At any rate most of the tuning will still be done with a full size monitor. I'll look at those links and see what I can pick up there.

Thanx for the info, Jon

Please note that many EMS websites let you download the software for free.

Yeah I down loaded the wolf 3d user manual (thought it was the software) and it has been very educational! I'm checking into a couple others as well so I'll have a well rounded idea of whats out there.

Thanx again, Jon
