as the title says i have an s5 n/a diff welded just recently and when im at low speeds turning in gear i hear a transmission chatter with the clutch depressed. is that normal having welded the diff? its an s5 tii engine and trans just n/a welded diff.

 

Probably something else in the driveline getting bound up and then letting go when the tire slips. Be careful the stub axles look like they are designed to snap on an oil groove that wraps around the shaft( and they do )

 

yea i bought new clips when i had it welded just in case. i checked but nothing is getting bound up, all i can think is possibly the gear bounces back and forth because of the pressure applied wanting to prevent wheel slip.

 

Check how much your driveshaft spins freely without the wheels moving. It should only be a few degrees. If it moves more than a 1/4" you need to re-set the ring gear and tighten the lash up.

 

yea you might wanna just learn to accept this noise lol. Or save up and get a real diff.

Its more than likely the differential case just hitting against the body of the car when your turning corners. you'll learn to take wider turns. this kinda helps keep the chirping to a minimum on the street.

 

theres practically no freespin when i turn the shaft, if anything an eith at that. other that that noise occasionally i have no complaints, it beats open diff on a rainy day. i triple checked everything also to make sure nothing is loose.

i figured i might have to live with it, if i come across a diff with 2way at a great deal ill get it but for now this will do. i never thought about the case hitting the body though, ill check that out.

 

As far as I know, everyone with a welded deals with this issue.

You can counteract the diff casing movement a little with stiff front and rear mounts, as well as a pinion snub. But at the end of the day, its still a welded diff. Its gonna be noisy as hell no matter what you do. The only thing you can do is make sure the power is making it to the ground by checking your mounts. The front rubber one is usually the first to go.

 

That makes sense, ill look into getting solid diff mounts. I checked them recently and there still intact but ill definitely be upgrading them soon. Thanks for the helpful advice.

 

um. thats not your trans. its your tires chirping because they are turning at the same rate. and when you turn one has to slip(on the ground) in order to do it. your trans and diff are fine. well an na diff will break fast if you beat on it.

 

i have a welded in my car... and it gets a chattery/slappy noise that sounds like its at the back of the trans/front of Drive shaft area.... I checked everything... its normal. Like said before, its the driveline binding up and unloading. I have solid mounted everything you're not gonna get rid of it unless you go with a 2 way or a 1.5 way. I just ride the clutch a little when i'm doing slow speed turns to keep the Driveshaft and trans gears loaded.... no noises 'cept the tire chirp from the inner tire.

 

Ok cool, yea I get that chattery noise when turning slow and when I ride the clutch a bit its gone Glad to hear im not the only one. The binding makes sense, solid diff mounts im sure would still be a good idea for me to get. Thanks

 

LOL i have this same problem.. It chatters like metal to metal sound when making tight turns and the clutch depressed and in gear. However when i make a tight turn and drop it in neutral it doesnt make the chattering sound. Weird? sounds like its coming from the transmission though.

 

im planning on welding my diff here pretty soon. what all should i replace?

 

It should he noted as common sense that if your bushings and mounts are in poor shape, they should be replaced. Nothing besides the carrier itself should be modified when welding a diff, and assuming your car is in top mechanical shape, you should have no issues.

I also thought it was common sense these days that a welded diff causes erratic movement in driveline components with any car, and the resultant noises are normal. Guess that's just me being old-school and/or ghetto, or kids these days wanting perfect everything for nothing.
