single stage versus multi stage paints
a little later down the road i plan on painting my car since it is cracking/scaling like a lizard due to age.
anyways i wanted to know why so many people go for multi stage paints with clear. the only benefit i can see for clear is for depth, which helps metallics look more professional and multi dimensional. for simple colors i really see absolutely no benefit to using a clear coat, obviously i sound biased because i have dealt with plenty of flaking clear coats in my years, hence i am biased.
is there some other point i'm missing that clear coat offers benefits for? if a single stage paint gets oxidized or faded a simple buff takes care of it. if the same happens on a multi stage paint job the damage will be readily apparent quite soon and takes much more effort to correct.
so someone tell me there is more than just the benefit of depth in paint as to why so many people think that multi stage paint is a good idea.
to those who may say it "polishes out better", don't bother because it doesn't..

It depends on the quality of the paint there are some single stage paints out there that are better than multi stage. Usually I stick with single stage if i am going with a solid color and base/clear if I am going to use a metallic.
A couple months old, but I have been told that basecoat-clearcoat systems offer better uv ray protection from the sun, but Iim sure all of this will be argued to the end of time. Also with the basecoat- clearcoat system, when spraying the clearcoat, if you have a problem, you can sand and re-clear, thats a benefit I see in using a multi-stage system.
