Heads up for those attending DGRR with intentions of running the gap.
***I just spoke with Phil, and this information is definitely good to know. However, it should NOT affect the DGRRX event because it's located further west from the area of the Dragon that we run during the event. It should be business as usual for us next month

Within the last week or so US129 has had a large rockslide occur down towards the lake. TDOT has one lane cleared however they issued a statement, which i have copied from another forum:

Just wanted to send you all a note and let you know about a potential
problem. There has been a rockslide on US-129 (aka Deal's Gap, Tail of the
Dragon) down beside the lake on the Tennessee side approximately 1.5 miles
south of Foothills Parkway.
The TN governor has decided not to accept North Carolina's help with law
enforcement and emergency services and instead has decided to close the
road entirely from the rockslide south to the state line. In other words,
the road is closed entirely. Current estimates are that it will continue to
be closed until July or August.
This may not affect most of the attendee's, however I felt it wise to give the heads up, as there may be increased police presence, in addtion to the possibility of not using the lake for large gatherings.

Actually, if you watch the video, you can see he has a cellphone IN HAND as he exits the vehicle and speaks towards the officer and camera. But judging from both the video AND from killboy's webshots, that area the rockslide occurred on is a fairly straight stretch of road, but a mild bend before the pile of rubble. And clearly there was an officer PARKED off to the side of the road in what appears to be a picnic spot (theres a picnic table in a gravel lot right there), so he HAD to have seen the cop and should have already been slowing down.
But he deserves him a darwin award for being a dumbfuck.
