Why not fontana village?

So, I'm asking (I think) an obvious and possibly already answered question about DGRR. I'm signed up for DGRR '18 for my first visit, and being semi-local I can't help but wonder, why is the rally not held at Fontana Village, which is a much larger facility, more restaurants, entertainment, more lodging etc.? Oh, and 5 mins from the Dam (for the photo) and 15 mins from the crossroads. Was there a problem there in the past? Just curious, as me and my wife and my FD are likely to stay there as that's what we're familiar with.

VA I wondered about this as well.

I thought I heard there was an issue in the past. I am sure someone will chime in. I have stayed at Fontana Village before as well and it was good. I haven't stayed there for like 10 years or so. The bad part was there is no cell coverage there I don't believe? I can't remember right off. Also everything else is so far away. There wasn't anything close to it like places to eat and such.

Past issues with ballooning rates, and level of service by the resort. We rent out the enter Nantahalla Village resort, and they treat us really well. There are also breweries, restaurants etc just 10 minutes down the road. Overall, this location works out best for us currently. I doubt we will ever move back to Fontana.

I go there a couple times per year usually. Yeah, a long way from town for sure, and cell coverage is sketchy if you need it, they have Verizon signal boosters at the main lodge, so that's better than nothing.

Understood, yeah their rates have gone up some in the last few years, as has everything else since '08 it seems like. Also, agreed, Bryson City is a nice place.
