A few techical suggestions to the forum lead admin's

I have a few suggestions to make rx7 club better

1) Make search more visible

2) Use http://www.sphinxsearch.com/ very helpfull for all my clients sites, I'm sure it can be used on vBulletin or it can be custom coded, search on a 1mil database is very quick. I did a search earlier and it took for ******* ever, I like my searches like google. If you make the search query slightly wrong then you gotta wait 10sec, then do it again, can be quite annoying.

3) Recent Topics mod, I don't know if this exsists for vb once again we don't use vb, its coded horribly but a recent topics mod isnt too hard at all, its also very handy refreshing via ajax every 10-15 seconds (The one we use does X seconds) rx7club has tons of sections, it'd be much easier to browse teh club by viewing recent posts.

Otherwise all seems speedy and no more db errors yay

RE #3. Recent topics aka New Posts can be found here:

If you'd like something with a bit more pep you can use this link www.rx7club.com/vaispy.php

This has not been intergrated into the site yet, but may be added in a later update.

RE #2. When were you having issues with the search?

Since the server migration nearly all of the slow response issues have been eliminated. If you were searching in the early morning hours you may have been searching at the same time as the nightly backup.

RE #1. Please elaborate on more visible.

In addition to the header link at the top of every page there are also "search this thread" and/or "search this forum" links on every page. Are you suggesting they be BIGGER or in more locations.

Oh yeah I used it at night hmm

I just searched right now, took long time.

The sphinx search takes literally a second or two to search the term "rx7" for example, it's easy to integrate and you can run it on the same server or seperate.

You run a cronjob to update the searchd every 5-10 mins thus its not a dynamic search, it uses a update only method and every night or so runs a full update, takes only a few mins for the full, the update method only scans the vb posts table for new records.

I was just saying make search more visible for new members, to encourage the use of search I always almost forget vb boards have search due to the tiny "Search" with javascript popup.

omfg that ispy ***** neat, thx for showing

rx7 club is fine for me, I'm just saying typing whatever search query and results in half sec to 2 seconds would be more appealing then waiting a half min and more depending on what query, how busy mysql is.

With sphinx 20 people searching at same time uses no power of mysql thus theres never tables locking during searching, slow downs, etc.

I'm leading expert in high performance ipb setups for sites the size of rx7club, so I gave you guys my 2cents, if you want to take my advise or not doesn't affect me rx7club is still my fav source for rx7 discussions.

Good into, I'll pass it along to the IB staff. Please keep in mind the forum isn't being operated by an individual now, but a much larger company (Internet Brands).

Here are some of their other sites.... http://www.internetbrands.com/ib/

All of the technical backend administration goes through them and their staff.

Yeah I remember

with over 5 million posts, I'd say IB should look into a dedicated sphinx server, they can also use it for each other forum. It prevents the use of mysql for any type of search thus everything runs more smooth.

I notice they have alot of large boards, hopefully they look into optimizations.
