BC Yet another Online Scam Ad!!

So a couple of members have brought this to my attention:

http://ontario.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehi...AdIdZ320087599

This is some jerk trying to rip people off. It has been reported, however it seems to take them forever to review and remove. Hopefully no one gets burned.

Thanks to the members that have brought it to my attention.

Good price though lol.

Hopefully it will make what's going on more obvious to people. These guys are rarely clever.

I'm intrigued by how these type of scam works. Would somebody actually put money down on a car they can't physically see and feel? I don't see how anybody could fall for this even if they weren't knowledgeable enough to know that the price was way below market value. Does anybody know?

Thanks!

I had someone attempt to pull a scam on me for a '96 miata. They were asking $2000 which was fair below the price, so I simply sent them an e-mail saying I'd take it upon inspection. They told me that they had people tell them that before, and that they were sick of people wasting their time.
He told me that ebay had a policy that I had a week with the car, and that if i felt they mis-represented the vehicle, that i could send it back without incurring any costs.

Well, that seems strange enough as it is, as I told them I had cash and no credit card or anything, and they insisted upon ebay. I looked for the car on ebay, and of course, it was not there. He sent me a link to another website, which was very cleverly done. It was a copy of an ebay motors link, but looked something like this, motors.ebay.ca-bins.com.

The site was a very good representation of the actual site, and the user was not registered with ebay. It would be easy for a naive person to fall into the scam.

I answered an ad on Kijiji earlier in the year for an FD in Ottawa at a ridiculously low price. The guy said he was a diplomat who had be transferred to a new assignment in Europe. He told me the same story about how the exchange of money would happen through ebay so I would be protected. This was the first red flag, as I know that an eBay transaction isn't protected by ebay unless the item is listed on ebay. The second red flag was when he told me the car was in a shipping container in a warehouse in Corner Brook, Newfoundland. If you were in Ottawa, why would you ship the car to the Rock?

As for the "who falls for these scams" question, there are lot's of greedy/gullible people out there who will send the money to the ex-Nigerian finance minister or the former US soldier in Iraq so that they get their alleged cut on the money these people say they have stashed and need help getting moved. Happens all the time.

Another common scam is to approach someone who is selling something on Kijiji and tell them you want to buy it, but you only have a $5000 money order. The scammer tells the seller to take the money order, cash it, and then give back the balance less a few extra dollar for their inconvenience. By the time the seller's bank tells them the MO was phony, the alleged buyer is long gone. I had friends who used to sell puppies, and they would get approached every couple of months by someone trying to pull this scam off on them.

Finally, here is another crafty use of bogus bank drafts to bilk people. This one seemed so legit:

Lesson learned: if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is.

Another one that is very commonly used is the scammers get ahold of people selling online and try to pay using bogus PayPal emails, advising that the money has been paid for the item to paypal, and will not appear in your paypal account until shipping of the item has been verified.

The emails are not from paypal but are designed very well to come across like they are. People send the item and never recieve payment as it was all fraudulent to being with.

Always check your account with paypal.com. And don't follow any links from these emails.

OH MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DOES THAT MEAN I AM NOT GETTING THE VEILSIDE RX7 DELIVERED TO ME BY SOME LADY THAT GOT A DIVORCE WHO'S HUSBAND SLEPT WITH THE BABYSITTER THAT WAS A MINOR THAT WAS IN A SCHOOL GIRL OUTFIT?!

Yes I know it's in all caps, just emphasizing that these people need help. I actually did respond to the add, I knew it was a scam.. it was awesome what she wrote:
Please give me a little time to explain you the process of this transaction,
As I told you in my first email, i divorced, i got a new job and moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba. Before leaving I had prearranged the deal with PayPal so my presence isn't necessary. The car is located in Winnipeg at the shipping company, ready to be delivered. The car will arrive at your address in 3-5 working days. The shipping cost is included in the total price of the car! You will have 5 days to test it and inspect the car prior to make any purchase and if by any reason you find something you don't like about it you can send it back on my cost. So if you want to make this deal I need the following details from you:
full name and address
phone #
After I will have all this details I will forward them to PayPal and I will proceed this transaction. PayPal will contact you with all the details that you need to complete this deal and also to see that i am covered by them and that I am legit seller. Waiting your email with the requested details.
Regards!!"

That's also why it is so frustrating when it takes these sites a week to remove them after numerous complaints. Naieve people are getting burned.

Here is likely another one. It apparently has an ls1 engine but uses a power FC. Good combination
