Whats needed in an interior?
Im looking to rip my entire interior out of my car. Everything is going except the bare essentials.
To be street legal, to your knowledge, what do I have to keep ?
Obvioulsy:
Seat Belt
Seat
Steering Wheel
Turn Signal Controls and light switches
I dont think you need a dash (on older cars). Dont need any trim peices.
I tried searching legal documentation, but Im useless at that.

Chev!
Yeah, After some consulting, Im going to put another turbo motor in it. Its better a better idea for now.
Mainly because I have to spend a bazillion $$$ on the suspension so it doesnt try to kill us again.

A factory cup holder would be even better. If only mazda would pay my drycleaning bill.......ohhhhhhhh if only.
I'll be retaining the fan and probably the heatercore as well. since all the other controls are electronic, they will probably be relocated somehow.
Or (just thought of it now) I'll probably just have an on/off switch for the fan, and a cold hot lever for the heater core. I'll just run only the vents to the front windows.

To get the thing to pass safety, you need working seatbelts, climate control must work at all speeds and positions, horn must work, wipers/washers must work, all exterior lights must work...
I think thats all for the interior according to safety. At least, thats what we usually check out. I haven't had a car come in with a gutted interior, so I haven't had to check the book.
Oh, and for the poster above, you do need hatch glass because the rear defroster must work(at least the indicator light on the control must work, indicating on and off)

I cant imagine you must have a rear defog. Front yes, but rear? my 88 FC came with no defog. Every truck I've ever owned had no rear defog. The rule we usually go by is that if its there, it must work regardless if its nessesary or not. If its not there, unless it must have it (like headlights) then its fine.
The Idea of this was to remove the interior except for the absolute bare essentials. That includes removing the dash and all applicable trim. I was going to keep the blower motor with heater core and vents to only the defrost position. Probably rig up a button to activate the blower (on and off only) and a little hand lever to switch from hot to cold.
The steering colum would house the combination switch (lights, signals and wipers) - Also the Tachometer and oil pressure guage. My ECU output has all other applicable information if nessesary. I was going to use a racelogic for a speedometer, or an aftermarket Autometer setup. Or I could attach the factory one to the bulkhead (firewall) and illuminate it.
Car will probably be half caged (because I dont like getting in and out of full caged cars all the time). Or a full cage with the cross bars removed for normal use. Adjustable Racing style bucket seats, standard normal seat belts AND a 4 or 5 point harness for more spirited driving. Probably use an aftermarket steering wheel. Probably NOT a quick release style.
Thats all I can think of off the top of my head. Realistically, there are many older vehicles that have no technical 'dashboard'. They simply have information centers in the middle, or where-ever.

For the love of all things rotary, please pad the bars near your head. You'd be surprise how far your body will move in an accident and if you don't have a helmet on when you hit those bars, a machine will be doing your breathing for you for the rest of your life.
