What was your life like when you joined Rx-7 club?

I decided to start this thread because I was thinking about where I was when I bought my first Rx-7 and I first joined here (according to the thing in 2004, although it feels longer). And Im a little bored.

So I'll start. 4 years ago when I joined, I was a general labourer working at a processing plant for what I guess could be considered average wage. I had little knowledge of cars, and desired a cheap, simple sports car. I picked up my first Rx-7, an SA22C. It was rusted out but ran like a champ. I didnt know a rotary even exsisted until I opened the hood. Seriously. I joined here shortly after.

It's been such a long time, it's hard to know where to start.
A few of us go back further than our counters indicate. The forum was hacked so some our start dates don't really tell when we joined. Just when the last time the forum was hacked.

I picked up my FD in 98. Joined the forum shortly there after.
At the time I was working for a small computer firm getting everything ready for the whole Y2K "crunch".
I first saw the FD when I was 16 at my local Mazda dealer. Didn't have a clue to what it was until the sales guy took pity on me and took me out for a test drive.
I instantly fell in love with the car after that short test drive.
I started to save some cash and by fall of 98 I picked up my 94 FD. I got to know the car a bit but I was still puzzled by alot of things. That's when noticed the forum.
I actually started talking to Rxcetera on the Road and Track forum. That's how far back we go. Hence the Hardcore Elite Canuck Squad designation.

So long ago, 10 years in fact.

I was 19 and had just purchased my 2nd gen. I too was preparing for Y2K and getting into the role of working full time (it was a bit of an adjustment). I didn't spend much time in the Canadian Forum until my early twenties after I attended a meet. Best part about that meet was the argument over whether I was going to turbo my NA.

Although my id states a join date I think I joined about a year or so prior but those ids were deemed too controversial by the forum admins at the time. I think my former Ids were "Lawyer", "Lawyer's Ghost", "Lawyer's Phantom" and then finally "Lawyer's Spirit", which I voluntarily retired for my favourite cartoon character Scrappy Doo.

I bought my first rx7 in 1991 or 1992. A white gxl 2nd gen with 60k on it. I loved it so subsequently pimped that ride. I'll have to find a picture of it and post it. Maybe others could post pics of their first rx.

I learned of the forum very late in my rotary life. I enjoyed the space and have made efforts in the past to try and bring some level of organization to the local scene.

I was in law school when I joined the forum and I have been practising for about 3 years now in the area of criminal defence. Unfortunately work and private life have stopped me from having as much time as I would like for my hobbies.

That said, I haven't heard of much going on locally in comparison to previous years. Hopefully threads like this one can revive some activity both on and off the forum.

my first rx was a long time ago I was 14 years old and a friend of the family
gave me a rx2 that had been in a crash.
first car project in a few months I had it fixed up and ready to drive.
learned how to drive in it, up and down the drive way.
that was about 28 years ago.
I have always wondered what my life would have been like if the rx2 was never
given to me.
maybe I would have been a better person. LOL
so to answer the question, doing what most 14 year olds were doing 28 or 29 years ago.

Matt

I joined the forum before the crash as 5.0 RX7 as I was about to transplant a ford H.O. 302 in to a 2nd gen I got for free. I was blindsided by rotary nuts saying it was sacreligious etc. so I gave in. Back then Cheers car was running, as was Ian's, Neo was a virgin, and post "cruise" stories brought tears to your eyes laughing as people recounted the light insanity experienced in Ottawa and Niagara, etc. Now that I am settled in a house I do plan on having people over in the spring for a bbq so keep the spirit alive! Oh and I have a hoist so no need to revisit the redneck engine pull!

I bought an 86 when I was 19. It was running but not drivable (needed new driveshaft). I was so excited that I started it up every morning and shut if off without warming it up. I did this for 3 days until it flooded. I did not have time for it while I was in school so it sat for 3 years. Internet was a luxury then and I had no idea what a simple mistake I made. Never did get it running but it became my lab tool. On my 4th RX7 now.

I stumbled on the forum before the crash. I discovered the Canadian section and was a little hesitant to post much as it was not cool to make friends on the internet. That was until the first meet in KW.

Met some good people and some not so good people. Many have come and gone. I'm still around and always will be but I've also moved on in some ways. My priorities have changed but I'm always up for a good meet.

I had more money in the bank when I joined. Only plan was to install 99 spec body kit, repaint blue, and rims. 2 years later and I've spent 4-5 times what I paid for the car when I consider everything... and its still not complete...

I joined up last summer after I bought my first and current RX-7. I'm slowly beginning to use the forum more. I bought my '88 GXL last April off of a friend that I had met at trade school. When I was at trade school everyone talked about all of there toys that they had, classic cars, hot rods, bikes ect. I then decided I needed a toy as well and ended up buying my RX-7. Life hasn't been the same since. It's only November and I miss it already. April won't come fast enough.

I bought my FD this year at the age of 30. I wanted a fast car that I could still enjoy while I'm still "young". I didn't want to be one of those old men driving corvettes like an old man. My mid-life crisis started early lol.

I was reading a thread I searched today from a couple years ago and there was this guy on there who was a total moron. Just didnt know what the hell was going on about and they posted just general crap. What an a--hole, I thought. When I noticed it was me, 4 years ago and fresh out of high school and green as could be. My first rx-7 and I thought I knew everything and could box in the ring with the big boys.

I had that sinking embarrassing feeling in my gut for about an hour while I laughed about it. Amazing how we change eh? My wife says Im still an a--hole sometimes.

Well 3 years ago when I first got my 1983 mazda rx7 GSL. My dad read in the smart shopper that there is a rx7 for sale and I loved FNF movies because well the cars. He asked me (are rx7s any good) and i did not know anything about them and I did not remember what they are I only seen the 3rd gens. So I was like how much he said $200 and I said can i call to see if he will trade for a go-kart he did not got for the go-kart but we went down to see it anyway. On the way there i remembered I left the number of the house so we passed it did not see it but my dad knows what they look like and spoted it on the 2nd passing. When we got out and started walking over to it my dad looked at me and saw it in my eyes I was in LOVE so bull to love on first site. So after looking at it and talking to the guy for about 2 hours and me cleaning up my mouth. My dad said to we need a sellers package first then a week later we went to go pick it up and got it towed home. I tell you its a head turner stock or not. That same day I took pics and went up on the rx7club nov 12.

Oh memories. Things have been slow this year and on the forum. The elite hardcore canuk has significantly cooled down.

I was with the original email list. Then joined the rx7 forum. Been to almost all rotary shops in ontario. Back when there was piranha brothers and apex/mazda-r-us etc. Had a rotary for almost 19 years.

Like racerjason said redneck engine pull is a thing of the past and back then Cheers car ran. EvilRotor was just Evil and ottawa was the tale of rotary cruise's and fun filled weekends.

Even a few of us had work email lists (About 15 of us or so) that fired off emails daily to the tune of 200 during the long days of trying to make cash to fuel our toys.

Some things are the same but alot of things are different. I remember taking my rx7 from the 400 up to canada's wonderland and seeing trees! I also remember cruising non stop up hwy 41 to chalk river at approx 120km without see any cops (Try that one now!)

Been from the west coast to the east coast. This summer a few of us are going to florida keys.

I've had 2 major relations ships and one divorce with an rx7 and still own one!

I guess I can go on for ever. Rotary has been a big part of my life. Not the best financial object but nothing fun is free.

Ian

My story

My join date is the right one.
It was about 3 years ago and I was doing what I'm doing now, which is teaching, coaching, being married, raising 2 children and paying bills.

At that time, I had found new strength and ways to refuel my love for this car, so I joined without a 7, to start learning and, obviously, to start looking for one.
I even made up a spreadsheet to keep track of used values based on conditions, year and so on.
Finally, at the beginning of 2007, I found a 93 RX7 at Mazdees (posted on this forum, BTW). I didn't hesitate and got it.
So far, it has served me well. I keep working on it, but soon I think I'll do a big restauration/upgrade/update.

I fell in love with this car in 1995, when I saw it for the first time. I moved here from Italy (Canadian wife wanted to come back...). I was going to the gym to work out and... there it was. It was love at first sight. I said to myself: "I must get one of these one day". 12 years later, I got the car I had loved for that long time.

It was a couple years ago. I had come home with a buddy from a BMX jam. I told him I was looking into getting a fun car, wasn't sure what to get. He started going on about this RX-7 and it's rotary engine. Being in school for mechanical engineering tech. I was very fascinated with how it worked. A few months later I bought a my first 7 which I never saw on the road. I ended up selling it for one that had been less un-molested and in better shape.

I knew nothing about cars before my 7, I had never even done an oil change. I remember going out 3 days after buying my 7 and I had to replace my alternator since it died the night before. I was damn proud when I pulled the old one off, replaced it, and it worked. As small a task as it seems now, it was a feat then...

My 7 is a big part of my life. Not only because of the car, but also because of some of the good people & friends I've met through this car.

To boot, I just took a weekend job to make enough $ to pay off school and get the toys I want for next season...

Some of you guys are getting me all teary eyed.

We've done a lot on this crappy little Canadian forum:

-We organized our 1st meet on here (which I never made it to because I got lost). That was on August 18th 2001. The 2nd meet later that year was more successfull and most of the guys that showed up for that one are still on here.

-That little meet led to planning a Winnipeg meet but instead grew to become the Ottawa meet which was, in its day, a huge car filled (and beer fueled) blast. I have so many Ottawa meet memories. Cars rolling over, cops showing up at my house, Kingston to Ottawa in a 1/2 hour. Those were the days.

-The long time guys will remember the CHAT THREAD from years ago where we actually managed to crash the entire forum repeadedly. You guys made my job at Nortel bareable (actually... you gave me something to do while I was there).

-Let's also all remember the late Jesse Rankin and how hard that was on many of us. Many people here donated lots of money to his memory and his mother was amazed by the love demonstraded in our little RX-7 community.

-And of course, there was the Re(tar)Ted vs me and Silverocket war. That one is definitely worth digging up.

There's many more events I'm forgetting but those are the ones that come to mind when I think of this club.

Many of us have made friends for life through this forum and still get together regularily. Most get togethers don't really have anything to do with RX-7's anymore but we mostly all still have them in a garage somewhere. I've been to 4 members weddings (and stags and bachelor parties) and all of them had a dedicated RX-7 club table (including mine!). We even made it down to Sevenstock 7 in 2004 (but you guys were missing there every year since!). On a personal note, I even met my best friend through this club.

I'm seriously thinking of organizing a Portugal meet for the hardcores of the bunch a couple years from now. RX-7's wont be involved but those rental Clio's and Ibiza's work just fine .

I had pulled my life together and was rewarding myself by starting a rebuild on an old RX3 I had dragged around for the previous 2 decades. Some times running, most not.

I found the Internet and the RX7 club around the same time. Information!!

I'm on year 4 of the build. Money is a limiting factor! I'm enjoying the process.

Ah Billy, you almost pulled a full "lub" out of this old black heart of mine.

Joined up in '03. Was working at GM at the time, living above a crack head. Since that time there have been 3 other engines in the car, 4 (1 mine) weddings, 3 babies (1 mine), new houses, new jobs, countless meets... Honest injun, the people I hang out with most are RX-7 people.

When I joined I was 18, midway through my apprenticeship as a mechanic. My first car I bought when I was 15, it was an '88 base. When I bought it, I too knew NOTHING about cars, not even how to change the oil. I was really intrigued by how much I didn't know, and it's probably the main reason I started my apprenticeship.

Eventually sold it, bought a 10th A.E. Turbo probably at the same time as I joined this forum, because it came "with a bad turbo". turns out it ate an apex seal in the rear rotor, so I've had a lot of learning to do.

Just yesterday did I get to actually drive it for the first time (picked it up from RPM in KW), and had to drive it home in a snowstorm on bald sports tires. Thought it was going to be the last time I drive it too!!!

I also brought my FD way back, in 99. Joined shortly after, when the forum was simply called rx7forums.com and was running a very basic bulletin board software, there was no VBulletin back then...

And, yes, we had the same discussions about moderators and forums ghlitches back then lol

Wow, some of you guys really have been here since the beginning. For me, I had been helping a friend fix up his T2 a year before I joined. I had been trolling but I didn't want to join until I had my name on the registration. That same friend found an 87 arctic silver NA with no engine. We found a rebuilt engine from another friend and we put the thing together in one weekend in a different friends driveway... I didn't know too much about the rotary or rx7's at the time... all I knew what that my Celica GT was a POS compared to the FC.

I still remember saying to my friend in Russel Peter's voice "Are you suuure?" when he told me to rev the engine while he poured water into the intake. Those were the days for sure... No more engine pulls with 2x4's for me either!
