Very Interesting Event July 13th at TMP

Al Balinsky is arranging a race at TMP this July 13th. It is going to be on the same day as the Nitro Nationals on the Drag strip, so it should be well attended with spectators. It is going to be arranged so that all you require is a race car (full CASC/FIA approved car) and basic safety equipment. No race license required. The morning will be open practice, then a draw for starting positions, then 3 20 minute races. Cost will be $190 and knowing Al, he will get some sponsors to stump up money to reduce that further. The grid is being limited to 30 cars and he has a large number all ready,

I have also added 2 WC Cougars to the mix, so we are down to around 15 spots left and this is only after 1 day.

If you ever wanted to go racing and have a car that is race legal, this is the easiest way to get on track at a big event and the cheapest. Also, this race is a race run under 13/13 rules (which means instant disqualification if you touch someone). If this event is successful, Al is looking at doing another one in October and more next year.

With this many cars and the amount of HP and mods, we should see some very fast times. Anyone know the track record for a sedan at TMP? I wonder how fast some of these cars will go? Anybody with a race prepped FC or FD want to come out and play as well?

Wow, hit a hundred views and no comments. Some of the top CSCS cars are legal to run this event as long as they have a full cage. It is a no contact event, so it shouldn't be any different than a regular CSCS event, except that there is passing everywhere. I know that Andrew's car and Jim's black FD would be legal and could do very well at this facility. You do not require a race license to do this as long as you have decent experience based on Al's knowledge of you.

This is a cheap and easy way to come out and go wheel to wheel and see if you like it. I would really like to see a number of fire breathing rotaries out there. As it is, mine will be the only FC and Marlin's the only RX8.

If I could ship my FC back from Guyana, the old man would be all over this It's the only rx7 he WILL every drive back bahaha. Maybe I will come out to watch!

I think that this event would be a good place to show that a decent horsepower smaller car would be close in speed to a big car. The only caveat is that Steve Moores Rocketsports Corvette has an ex NASCAR SB2 motor in it making close to 800 hp, has tires 16" wide on the back and weighs about 2800 - 3,000 lbs.

It would take a pretty good driver to beat that. I have also heard that when Blaise Csida went to TMP to test the TA2 Camaro, he was running 1:13's all day long in it, so I would expect the Steve Moore car or the Jon Brett car to be in the 12's. If I could get my Cougar into the 18's, I would be delighted as it has about 250 whp and weighs 2800 lbs.

Just guessing at times.

Cool event. I think we need more grass roots "run what ya'brung and don't play bumper cars" options. Costs down, participation up.

I was just speaking with Al and he would love it if Andrew and a couple of others would come out to play. With the HP and handling some of you have and the experience on the track, you guys could do very well. There are only 5 spots left, then there will be a waiting list in case others drop out.

Here is your big chance to show what you guys have over a 20 minute race. Wheel to wheel, but no touching. It would be a ton of fun to see a flame spitting FC or FD showing their tailights to a Trans Am car. Latest news;

Thanks for the props Eric. We now only have 4 spots left and I'm sure they will fill up in the next few days. There is something about this event that I never posted or realized! This is an open lapping day at TMP. Any friends, family or anyone you know that have always wanted to drive on a track now is the chance. They pay the regular lapping fee of $170.00, and there will be 30+ licensed amateur, semi pro and professional racers that can mentor them all day when they are not racing or lapping themselves. The track is open from 10am-5pm that day, the only stoppage will be when we are racing. This is a great opportunity to make this a friends and family friendly event!

I would think that a number of you with cars that you track, would be interested on taking up the Track Owners lapping day offer. When else are you going to get to lap with a bunch of race cars, but not actually race. Nothing like getting stomped by an 800+ HP Trans Am car or showing me the way around TMP during the open lapping sessions. It is going to be a fun laid back day with tons of interesting cars to get on track with.

Oh yeah, bring your earplugs LOL.......

Depending on the response we get will define where we go from here. I believe there is a niche between all out regional racing and lapping. I have heard from many that they want to go race wheel to wheel but it is totally cost prohibitive etc. If this works well next year we will try and organize a series a smaller tracks (no GP track at Mosport) and have classes for non caged and race cars to compete wheel to wheel with one hard rule...........NO CONTACT BETWEEN VEHICLES.

Can you put me down anyway as tentative. I hope I can run with the GT1 cars, I can run consistent 1:16's at Cayuga

No issues, its just that they are limiting the entries to the first 30 cars that pay the entry fee. I have 3 cars coming to the event with 3 drivers and I know that Al already has 28 cars tentative right now. This leaves it really tight. My suggestion would be to register, pay your entry then when this gets oversubscribed closer to the day, you could flip your entry to someone else if you decide that a stag and then a race day is too much (I know I would). Keep in mind that doing the lap times is one thing, but you will also have guys passing you or you passing them, everywhere. You will need to be on the ball that day.

The races are only 20 minutes in length, so the car s should have no issues unless you are marginal on cooling. Its amazing how hot engines get after a few laps stuck up another cars backside trying to find a way past. I personally would love to see you come out and give it a shot.

This event has grown really fast. If you are on Facebook go to the Road Racing at TMP and join the group for updates! Also like the event: Toronto Motorsports Park/Champion Racing Oil GT Superseries with NGK & BEMC.
This also an open lapping day at the track so I would encourage you to come down and get the chance to lap with race cars during the open lapping part! Plus you will get hear Nitro Methane Funny Cars and Dragsters on the strip!
You are all welcome to come and it should be a fun day. For those of you with lots of Time Attack experience at the track to drivers would probably love your input on how to go fast there...........................I sure would!

June 19th Update

Update - I wanted to provide you guys with an update on what we are doing to get ready for the Inaugural Toronto Motorsports Park/Champion Racing Oil GT Superseries with NGK & BEMC. Mark Clyde is working very hard on his ex-Capaldi Cougar to get it ready for the event. He has replaced a couple of panels and is painting a few. He is also adding a custom front splitter made from the mould I received with my car and adding a proper WC Spec rear wing to his car that I had laying around, to replace the tuner wing that was on it when he bought it. He is going to change the fluids and get his hauler ready. A fair bit of work.

In my case, my RX7 is ready to rock except that I need to change the fluids over to fresh ones and replace a rear tire that I corded last fall at Mosport. For those of you who care, I know a lot of you have an unhealthy interest in oils and filters, I am using Redline Race 40W in the motor, Redline 75w90 NS for the gearbox and diff. I am going to use a Wix NASCAR level filter as well. A quick alignment, then the pig is ready to fly.

For the Cougar, I have sent the triple disc 5.5" clutch in to Quartermaster to be rebuilt and I should have it next week. I am waiting for the Quaife dogbox to be finished so it will be ready to go back in to the car as well. The front brakes have been rebuilt and the car redecaled. after I put the gearbox and clutch back in the car, a quick alignment and then that car will need all new fluids as well. In this case I am going to use my Q Racing 20w50 oil in the motor, some redline Shockproof Light in the dogbox and finally a Ford Motorsport Filter, just for some bling.

I have to make sure that both of my tow vehicles are ready, my trailer ready and I need to dig up a second car trailer. Anyone have a spare open car trailer that they could lend me for the weekend? I am flying in crew from Vancouver for the event, my co driver, Derek Ross is flying in from Colorado Springs for the event and he is going to drive the RX7. Mark Clyde will be running his Cougar and I will run mine. I have also brought on a driver coach/race manager for the day in Evan Groenke, who I have raced with in the past and his main job will be to make sure Mark is comfortable in his first race and to make sure that we are ready for all 3 races that day. We are also going to have the use of 4 Go-Pro cameras as well as a Replay camera, so we are going to get lots of footage of the event and we will be posting it after the day.

All looking good and if you can come out and see the event, drop by and say hi. I might be very busy, but I will appreciate meeting with all of you.
