Truck or SUV with small engine?

Does such thing exist (for gas reasons)? Prefer SUV type thing. Anyone know of any for sale cheap? or generally what types are cheap?

do you know the towing capabilities of those trucks? Will look into it, thanks,

The ones you mentioned are relatively new models, im looking for something a bit older so I could pick them up cheaper.

Anyone else?

the rangers aren't so great on gas and don't tow.

Older mazda b2200's (86?- 92?) are great trucks and tow well, the b2600 does too but is worse on gas.

if you find a diesel b2200 (good luck) they can tow and are great on fuel.

What sort of towing capacity do you need? The Mazda Tribute/Ford Escape is rated for 1500lb with the 4cyl, 3500lb with the 3.0 v6, which is pretty good in this class, although the six doesn't get nearly as good mileage, although not bad for small sport utes. The Xterra is rated for 2000lbs. Subaru Forester is 1000lbs w/o trailer brakes, 2200lbs with. Honda CR-V - 1500lb. Mixing mileage and towing capacity is a big order, especially with gas engines and smaller vehicles - and the older versions of these are likely to have lower towing capacities, as both size of the vehicles and engines (and importantly along with, brakes!) has grown a lot over the last decade. Diesels do well because of abundant torque and accompanying strong drivetrains, but as noted by Terrh's suggestion of a B-series diesel, are hard to come by (and most manufacturers never offered diesel in North America, except domestics in their full size trucks)

I had a '84 B2000 - super reliable, not too bad on gas but not much extra power - can't image it would tow too much.

KIA Sportage's are also an awesome 4x4. Other than the fact that the motor is a Mazda 2.0L Bottom end and a POS (I cant stress this enough) Top end, its great.

Thanks for all the info, alot of it :S. My price range is around 1K, I want to tow a vehicle from time to time, nothing more. I changed my mind and am thinking of an SUV, no pickup right now. In my price range I have seen the ford explorer ( I like its interior space), toyota 4runner, nissan pathfinder, GMC Jimmy, and cheep cherokee. all older models ranging from 88-93. I am thinking an old pathfinder would be best as parts are cheap and plentiful. But what caught my eye is a 93 Jeep Cherokee, 4 litre 4 cylinder in a beautiful red. Any comments on those? Interior space is important to me, so any suggestions based on that?

Also, sorry for my ignorance, but are vans any good as towing vehicles? if so, which one(s).

What am I looking at for insurance for an older SUV like I mentioned? more than the average car? alot more? more than a 7?

Thanks.

Carthik

I had a 88 chevy astro, which shares its chassis with a 1/2 ton. After replacing the crappy fibreglass leaf springs in the back in favour of stronger steel ones, I was able to get a 24 foot travel trailer behind her with ease, motor only making 190HP or so and a touch over 200ft/lbs of tourque.

4-Speed overdrive automatics are also borrowed from the 1/2 ton. And a Small Block drops right in. And there are a bazillion parts because everything chevy fits.

Cherokee's, I've heard some issues with the manual transmissions. They are cheap and plentiful, but the automatics are gold, if you can find one.

The Jeep with the 4.0 6 is exceptionally thirsty - I've known a few people to have them, and every single one comments on how bad the mileage is - worse than Explorer V8's and even some full size V8 SUVs. They will tow - we have friends who tow a 23' holiday trailer with a late 90's Cherokee - almost all that you will find out there are automatic.
Toyota 4Runner and early 3.0 or 3.3L Pathfinders will probably get you the best mileage, 'though I doubt finding running, roadworthy samples in the 1K range.

Yeah, thats the little situation im in right now, the jeep seems to be in my price range, and those japanese ones too, but they need work and are worn quite some bit. anyone know how much a pathfinder 88 tranny would cost me? I have checked ebay and all I found was one in the us for 800usd, seems VERY pricy.

The Chevy Astro, my uncle has one of those things, they seem very powerful. Only thing is, am I going to swallow my pride and drive around a van at the age of 17? lol, tough decision. But if the budget fits that is what I might be doing. What is the size of the engine on the Astro? and how's its milage? Common problems?

Lightbulb I Got A Suv For You

hey Carthik, i dont know if you would remember, but im the guy that was driving that SUV when that guy came to pick up your S5 lights around midnight. It was taking a while to get them out and that last bolt took forever, lol.

My car is a 1998 honda CRV. It's green with a grey interior. The whole car has about 146,000 km's on it, but other than that, the car is fine . Even though it's an SUV, it's great on gas because it is a 4-cylinder engine and because its awd, i find this car to be good for our winters.

MODIFICATIONS:

- NO MODIFICATIONS, just a custom deck install (USB compatible) and upgraded speakers.

MAIN REASON FOR SELLING IT:

I need the money and I wont' have any space for it especially for this year.

Recomended to look at:

- I assume this to be a natural thing because the car is getting old: due to the prolonger use to the suspension, the shocks need to be replaced.

- car needs a wheel alignment.

- something is wrong with the driver's side door. i think it's the actual hinge.

other than the door, the car runs fine. If you are looking for a simple car to drive from point A to point B, i present this one.

THE IMPORTANT STUFF:

Well, I planned on selling this car for, $6000 CDN, but I am willing to drop it down as much as $4000 if you are having trouble with your finances.

i dont mind holding this car over the summer to get it sold.

but if you are interested or not, give me a pm.

I know where you can get a turbo diesel 4 cyl 4 runner. They also have Turbo diesel Land Cruisers but they're pretty expensive. Also Mitsu. turbo diesels as well. Million Trading in Burlington.
