Swine Flu - Are you armed and ready?

Now some of you reading this may think I have finally gone off the deep end but I assure you I have my wits about me.

Not so long ago I had a business partner that was a gun fanatic. He ate, slept and drank guns. I’d be surfing here while he was over at snipercentral.com. He has actually written a book about how to hand load ammunition. I think you get the point.

He was always trying to get me to buy a gun. My initial reaction was always no, no, no, not for me.

But then Sars hit and he questioned me about what I would do if the outbreak was not contained. His view and mine was that Toronto could have been fully quarantined with all of us within the government decided boundary being left to perish. Now the question he put to me was “how are you going to save your uninfected kids?”

After contemplation I realized that he was right. I was at the mercy of whoever was armed. If there was an armed boundary I had no way of getting across it.

And trying to survive within a quarantined environment would probably turn into anarchy within a few days. Think back to the power failure that hit us a few years ago. How long before your neighbours turned into hungry enemies? I think we are only ever two weeks away from anarchy.

So I was convinced that there were some extreme circumstances where it would be beneficial to be armed. As you can see in the pic below my partner even got me to the range to learn how to use a weapon. But as with anything complacency set in after the Sars outbreak was contained and I did nothing about getting licensed to have a firearm. And now we have the Swine flu, which has got me thinking about my old partner’s words.

So my question to you all is, are you ready?

Just get a shot gun and keep it in your house with the bullets far from it. You don't need a license to own a gun. You need one to carry it, but not to own it. You can even own a hand gun and nothing can be done about it unless you carry it without a license.

I'm sure if a "zombie outbreak" happens, the last thing people will do is ask to see your license.

In Ontario you need a possessions licence to own a gun, and an acquisition licence to purchace a firearm. You would also have to get a lockable gun cabinet, and a trigger lock for them. Talk to Proctor, he would be able to tell you better than I would what you need. I will be armed like every other good Bruce County resident. A 60 of good rye will fight of anything.

Maybe you should read up on the topic it is really not a controversial point of view.

The definition of anarchy is "Absence of government; a state of lawlessness due to the absence or inefficiency of the supreme power; political disorder"(wiki).

How long do you think things would be rosy without the above?

Better than guns is to lay in emergency supplies - at least a couple weeks worth of food that doesn't require a lot of prep, a camp stove and fuel, clean water for drinking. Beyond that, if you're in a rural area, a gun and ammo supply is far more useful as a hunting weapon. Outside of that - unless you plan to be part of the anarchy, a gun is of limited utility. Keep in mind, firearms are far more likely to be used against their owners (or their household), either in domestic disputes, or being seized by an intruder. There's a reason the States has much higher gun crime rates - and violence at the hand of strangers is down the list of causes.

In terms of the paranoia factor - keep in mind regular flu's kill about 20,000 a year in Canada. So it's a bit early to fear the end of civilization just yet.

I will be armed to the teeth and my crawlspace resembles a fallout shelter with water and canned food for three months. I need to put a Glock sticker at my front door one of these days...

I am not suggesting that this is the time to freak out but merely that it reminded me that I have been complacent. But do you really think we will get full and proper notice when the end of days scenario actually arrives?(if ever)

I get to see the realities of gun crime almost first hand and I agree with your comments. But I also think some are responsible enough to manage gun ownership.

I have a couple of SAS survival guides in the house that provide a huge amount of information. I just hope the power stays on long enough for me to read them when needed.

I also need to freshen up on CPR. I was taught as a cub scout, but that was over 25 years ago. (it hurt to type that)

Well the US gun crime rate is higher to do higher populations, and that "crowded feeling". Not to mention the looser firearms laws, my guns are kept in a locked cabinet, with trigger locks, and in a locked room, the intruder would realize he better move on. A gun is totally useful in time of recession, you hunt to provide... Like the way it used to be, and should be.

Guns are only as safe as the people who handle them. We actually have very good gun training here in Canada unlike the US where you basically need a pulse, and no priors.
