Stories from Standard... Damn...

So I hit Standard yesterday as I needed a couple caliper mounts for a friends car whom I'm doing the brakes on. It's a Toyota so I have to browse the entire import area to see what I can find. Thing is the place is a sheet of ice. It's like disney at the skydome, people wiping out everywhere. Anyhow, II am of course keeping an eye out for 7's while I'm there. In 2004 not a single FC went in to the U-pull yard which sucked and was a bit of a surprise.

Low and behold I find a blue on blue S4 nearly complete near the back. I pull the demister grills a few odds and ends then climb up to the hood and crank it open. Nice and shiny this blue Mazda reman. badge catches my eye. It's a fresh engine and the car was written off after being hit in the passenger side. I pop the UIM and the runners are pristine, yep, has to be sub 50K on it.

But I'm screwed, I brough limited tools, have to get my friends brakes done before 5, no cell phone to call someone to help me pull it. Just then a pair of guys come walking up the aisle and are upset but not surprised that I had the hood up and was tinkering, they were there for the engine.

Being the good samaritan I am and them having limited rotary knowledge I tell them if they're here to take it then I'll give up as I don't have any help. I help them strip it down to the keg showing what to remove in what order. Once the LIM comes off I see it has a Racing Beat Streetable 2 in-to 1. Another lost opportunity. The kicker was when he told me that the guys in the office told him he could have the engine once presented to the cashier for $125. We had the engine out in about 45 mins. and the new owner was very pleased.

Sucks for me but good karma will pay off. Pay it forward. I could have said the engine was garbage and he would have believed me or dropped a bolt in an exhaust port but I'm just terrbily gentlemanly I guess.

Enough rambling, I just made a strong drink to relax with....

Base 4-bolt and the gas tank had a hole cut in it that I could put my head in.

The loss of the engine would have made me feel bad. But helping a guy who probably didnt have one would have made me feel even better.

Chalk one up to the Christmas spirit...
And in the spirit of giving, you still have that glove box to get for free.

I came across the same little piece of gold a couple of weeks ago.
Complete with intake and T.B. and ex. manifold would have only been $300.
there were still papers in the car that showed the motor only had about 20k miles. It sounded good just from spinning it with a ratchet, it had to be a good motor. But I was broke from having bought things all day at other junkyards.......Damn the luck....
